Very Very Very Close Tailgating

Last night I was travelling back from my lad's guitar lesson along a 30mph A road in the city, doing around 32mph, with the other cars.

A white Beemer sat behind me for a while.

I can't see a fat lot out of my rear screen after dark, other than recognising the lights of a 3 series Beemer.

For no apparent reason, he suddenly sped up and moved right up to my bumper, so close that his bonnet and lights disappeared and all I could see was the outline of his windscreen.

I couldn't see who was in the car - one person, two - who knows?

Now, like everyone else, I've been tailgated before, but this was different.

I actually expected to feel a nudge as he kissed my car with his.

He sat there for what seemed a long time, but was probably only a few seconds.

Without reducing speed, for fear of a shunt, I touched my brake lights and he dropped back.

About 15 seconds later, he did it again - so close I was again waiting for contact.

Another few hundred yards of being too close for comfort (and I mean close) and he dropped back again.

However, only for a few seconds, as drew up again for some more car to car intimacy.

He was so close that applying the brakes would have transferred the control from me to him, and I wasn't prepared to see if he could avoid the contact.

Then a junction appeared, he turned right and disappeared.

Easily the most threatening close quarter driving I've ever been subjected to - very unpleasant, particularly in the dark:devil:.

Then today, in broadly the same area, coming towards me was a white M3.

Co-incidence, possibly, but my theory is that he was attempting to goad my E63 into a bit of sport, to see how it went.

Who knows, but it does offer something of an explanation.

I've searched for an image of how I think it would have looked - there aren't many on Google, but I think this one comes close - remember, in my case, this was on the road, after dark:

It's an Australian Touring Car driver in England for pre-season training, you just need to pull over, slow down and let him pass. :)

His Son is doing a psych course and Dad is helping by using this site to test for response to stimulus and analysing character types.

Truth be known they are probably whacked out on drugs, you have to take that into consideration these days and the totally unpredictable behaviour that goes with it. As they say, be careful out there....

Curious now.... Do you mean V8 Supercars? If so the season is still on finishes at the next race in Sydney. They take a break then 'til next year. Its a winter series.

Good on ya boy, glad you are awake, did you watch Bathurst this year...??

You're not having a lot of luck in the dodgy character stakes lately, are you?

Nah, the other was four days ago now - that's a long time in the big city...

Be careful, far too many tosspots out there. It's only when they've caused an accident or killed someone, then they change unfortunately.

I had a similar situation coming off junction 3 M18 one evening last week; all I could see were these 3 series-type headlights come flying towards me in my rear view mirror, turns out it was also an M3.

Anyway, turns out he'd heard me on the motorway and followed me off a junction early just to have another listen, so I indulged him!

I suppose driving an M3 he wouldn't remember the last time he heard a good exhaust note, bless him.

Probably an unmarked police are hoping you'd speed up so they could nab you. ;)

Badge it up E200 Hybrid eco edition no one should bat an eye then :p

Does sound like goading to me - either to race or hear your car take off.

The fact you didn't rise to it probably upset them more.

Just take the Uzi you now carry as a result of the other day and point it at them out the drivers window...

:D

Either that or they bump you, you both pull over to exchange details / talk about it.

You get filled in , left by the roadside while one of them takes your car ?

Driving a drug dealers car at night round the mean streets of Brum , you have to expect this surely ?

Maybe nothing to it, other than the 3 Series driver was on the phone?

Hmmm, Selly Oak to Cotteridge, so basically yes.

Thought so, had a few similar experiences that way. Think they probably just wanted you to take off and have a race or something like that.

My brother in law uses this technique for goading something tasty into a race.
