Vito - Dropping to Limp mode.

Hi All,

My 2013 116cdi Vito has thrown an engine management light and is dropping to limp mode (reduced power, 2.5k revs).

From cold it's OK for a couple of miles and an engine restart will resit it briefly. In limp mode on the motorway it's a bit rough but urban driving is ok, if slow. The engine lamp didn't come on straight away.

We plugged in a Snap-on code reader and got:

P226300 - "The boost pressure deviates from the specific value. There is A General failure. - Stored"
P013326 - "Oxygen sensor 1 (cylinder banks 1) has a delayed reaction. The signal charge rate is below the permissible value. - Stored"

If anyone has come across this combination before, any info to speed the diagnostics would be appreciated.

Merry Christmas

David

It’s a shame these Mercs don’t ever go into mental power mode!!!
My E320CDi had the oxygen sensor issue and swirl flaps issue. I changed the sensor and installed an bypass emulator. That got it going again.
Good luck

Been getting similar with the Viano. The reason given was " Boost exceeded on acceleration" and has occurred when overtaking which is a bit embarrassing . Seems to be a leak on the air intake or connection to the turbo. Getting rid of the limp mode is usually stopping and restarting 3 or 4 times. It has worked when for me when it happens.

Marku, Cheers for the info. Is yours fixed or something you are living with ?

For a bit more information, I decided to give it a run out today and managed 40 miles, and it dropped to limp only once. No engine light as yet. I spent most of the time driving with a very light foot, with the auto changing up at the 2.5k mark. The only time it did drop to 'limp' was in the 1st half of the run when I floored it out of an island and it revved out to the 4k red line.

A quick 5 min stop reset it, and I took it on a longer run including a short stretch of motorway with no problems while light footed. Near to home I tried to load it a little harder (inc using manual selection) before letting rip in lower gears. No limp or light.

The only thing I did notice was that it missed occasionally in higher gears under a bit of load (in the 2.5k \ 60-70mph rage) although that wasn't obvious later in the run.

I did refill it with diesel yesterday and wonder if that has helped.

So, Not a temp related issue, don't think a speed related issue. But maybe a rev \ load related issue ?

It had happened several times last year and each time got rid of it by switching off and restarting. At the moment I am trying to resist putting my foot down too heavily on overtaking. When it happened again couple of weeks before Christmas I decided to take it in and that is when I got the reason "Boost exceeded on acceleration" which they said meant it was sucking in extra air through a leak in the turbo intake. I did look at the connection and back to the air cleaner the cover of which had a screw that had obviously been over tightened and now could not be screwed up. Reckon it must have been done last service in the summer. Now the holiday is over will have a go at fixing it and seeing if it makes any difference. If not it will have to go in if I can limit what might be an expensive fishing expedition.

Cheers for the info.

Mine seems to have cleared and I've not been able to prompt it into the limp mode again. I'll drop it to the local garage on Tuesday to get the guys to check it over but fingers crossed its a temporary blip. If they find anything I'll report back.

hi david, have the same issue, did you manage to solve limp mode ? replaced many parts so far to no avail

This sounds like a boost leak. Check the large boost hoses for cracks.

boost exceeded wouldn't be due to air leaks but due to problems with the boost pressure control allowing and over boost situation which is most likely on heavy load
