So bought a 2004 Vito 109CDI - all been good. Turned her on yesterday - all good. Didn't drive anywhere just moved it around on the drive to load some stuff in the back.

Today turned her on and Traction Control light came on (the wheel with arrows on it) and after about 2 mins also the ABS light came on.

Checked fuses - done the L to R steering wheel on full many times like 6 +

Luckily I have Star so plugged her in and got an ESP error and a Steering Angle Sensor error

So ESP : B1101 - No CAN message from control unit N30/4 Check parameterizaion LIMITER
and Steering Angle : B24/8 Check component using actual values

When I try to check actual it doesn't register any value other than 0. So a complete turn left doesn't change the value and a complete turn right doesn't either

My question is would a faulty Steering Angle Sensor really put both lights on? Or am I looking at an ESP issue as well?

Would like some advice if possible anyone :)

Hi
I have seen a used hybrid battery from a running car. We checked by meter nothing coming up. Does it mean it's dead or can be charged.

So its defo not the Brake Switch as that's passing giving values in Star. The only sensor that actually is not giving a reading is the Steering Angle Sensor so guess I'm gonna go with replacing that and fingers crossed

Ive Attached the Star Diag pics - if you can have a look and have any other ideas/advice please feel free to comment

Replaced the steering angle sensor twice now and still same issue yet Star is still saying that’s the problem :(

Anyone?? Maybe I’m missing something in Star???

Did you go through the calibration in star, i've not done it myself but sold a few sensors?

Hi 91dm

So yes I try Calibration but it never gives any readings. It just stays at 0. So if I turn left / right that value dissent change.

To add to this I have checked I have both power (14.6v) and CANBUS (ohms around 55) signals at the plug into the Steering Angle Sensor. And yes I do. I have also check for power at the ESP unit pins 1-2 and 5-6 - both show 14.6v

I have now tried 4 different Steering Sensors and none of them give any actual values and when I try to calibrate I don't get any values from them when turning LEFT / RIGHT

My feeling was that maybe ESP has been deactivated due to fault and so calibration wont work at this stage. So I went for Actuations on the ESP control unit and ran a Road Test hoping this would re-activate ESP - sadly it didn't as I could successfully fulfil the criteria for the Road Test (drive over 10kph, turn left or right - turn more than 90 degrees then stop. Tried many times it fails the road test

I am totally lost. I really could do with someone that 1: understand EPS issues on the vito and 2 L: knows how to get Star Diag to do what is needed lol

Do you still have the original wheel sensor, if you put that back on do you still get the exact same faults and reading?

Are all the wheel speed sensors reading ok values?

Hi 91dm. So yes if I put the original Steering Sensor back I get the exact same results - no values other than 0 and same Star Diag error

As regards the wheel speed sensors I do get actual values and they seem to be reading correct - just one this I've noticed when we are at standstill they flicker 0.xx (like 0.12) then back to 0 every second. Is that normal? Or should they always stay at 0 as well until we drive off - or move the wheels if on a jack?

see the photo of what star shows regarding the readings - that's when we are stationary

And yes I notice not says calibration not performed but when I try that I get no readings from the steering angle sensor :(

It just stays at 0

Have you checked the main connector on the ESP unit, is it clean and connected ok? Can you get readings for the ABS sensors?

OK update - short story ITS WORKING HURRAY

Long story - always noticed that if I drove straight with steering wheel id go slightly to the right. Took the steering wheel off again and checked the yellow mark line - found it one notch out! Replaced the steering angle sensor with yet another replacement. Put steering wheel back on lined up with the yellow line and put everything back.

NOW finally in Star Diag I got readings from the sensor AND was able to complete a road test!

THANK GOD

So it was either the other Steering Sensors were dead (bare in mind Id bought four all second hand) OR it was the steering wheel needed to be absolute straight. Issue is though that Ive had van ages with the steering wheel as it was and yet no ABS light came on. Strange but hey ho its working

Interestingly though, now my Audio 20 radio wont turn on lol. It has the flashing red klight but wont switch on :(

Bloody merc electrics

At least it's working, I can't see how all four sensors would be dead so must be the steering wheel alignment! Good to know about the steering wheel marks.

Good excuse to bin the audio 20 and upgrade to something more modern!
