Seems to be the exception rather than the rule.

Is this the case? I hardly see a W124 saloon or coupe with factory fitted cruise. :(

Mine has.

Option 443 tempomat (cruise control), and steering column electrically adjustable.

I installed one in mine... non-MB cruise control with original MB stalk, working like a charm.

Mine hasn't got it. Wish it did.

Allegedly:D

"Cruise is heavy on fuel."

Not when used properly (i.e. don't use it in hilly areas, towing, etc.) On a steady long trip it will reduce fuel consumption. I use mine habitually and am pretty confident it is a factor in the long-term average of 27+ mpg in my E320 Coupé (all fuel purchases recorded in a spreadsheet).

See this, for example:

"Test #3 Use Cruise Control

Result: Surprisingly effective way to save gas

Cold Hard Facts: Up to 14-percent savings, average savings of 7 percent

Recommendation: If you've got it, use it."

And here:

http://www.hypermilling.co.uk/pages/techniques/cruise-control.php

where on another page you will see:

"If you have a good cruise control system and have just dropped out of your optimum hypermilling speed then hit your resume buttom and the car will sort this out for you. In general you will now be accelerating "briskly" and efficiently."

which is the way I've always understood it too.

I use my factory cruise all the time, even on A-roads sometimes. It's getting to be a necessity with cameras etc now.
I came up from the South of France a couple of years ago at Christmas and managed 26mpg with the cruise on all the way set to 135km/h and additionally, when in the UK, the journey from Dover to Chester managed 27.
It really is the best car ever....!

It's certainly not common on W124s. Obviously you'll see it more on high-spec 280s and 320s but it's not a common option

Reportedly it's not too hard to retrofit

I have it on my 1994 E300D estate;

Mercedes E300D Multivalve W124 Estate (1994) - FULLY LOADED - MB-Tex, Electric Seats, Wood/Leather wheel, Alloys, Orthopedic Seat, Auto-Dim Mirror, Auto Climate Control, Fire Ext, Cruise Control

Beat that on a diesel W124 :p

My E300D Wagon didn't have it. I had an A8 that didn't have it before and that was really annoying as I bought it to do a long trip around Europe and not having cruise was annoying!

We have 2 e320's in the family (coupe and estate) Both have cruise fitted as standard but as Nick says they are the highest spec cars so no surprise they both had that option box ticked.

Wish i had it on my e220 how easy is it to fit ?
