Hi all, I am new to the forum so all this is new to me!

I have owned my 1995 E200 for almost two years now and it's been brilliant. Only one problem that's cropped up intermittently with the gearbox.

especially when cold, but sometimes when Hot the gears change with a 'thud' and sometimes takes forever to change.
she runs beautifully on Motorway trips.

Anyone had similar problems or anyone that can shed light on the problem?
All help appreciated.

Have you checked your ATF level? Insufficient ATF will cause lethargic gear shifts too...

I have checked first thing in the morning. The fluid was above the second line at the top of the stick. I was talking to a friend and he mentioned that it shoudnt be checked while cold. Is this correct.

Thanks for the response!

Maybe time for an atf/filter change if more than 40k since the last?

Always check the ATF with the engine running when cold it should be on the bottom line & when hot it will be on the top line

Thanks for the info!

I have a 4 speed auto, with 78,000 miles.

Will check it on Monday as i'm away for the weekend.

Ill keep you posted on how i get on.

I never bother : there's a big plate on the front and back of every car displaying the registration mark for all the world to see .

The vacuum controls the shift quality & the cable is a pressure control cable which can make the shifts early or late
