W124 e220 coupe correct spring part numbers

These do work, i suggested this for my W204 but Wheels-in-motion highlighted to me you need to be careful with pads, the stroke of the damper may not be able to accommodate the different height, how much impact it would have I do not know, but i changed back to stock pads just incase

That would definitely apply if the car was fitted with shorter stroke struts/shocks along with the shorter springs when it was lowered . However what often happens is that folks often lower their car with springs only and retain the standard stroke struts/ shocks in which case thicker pads will actually improve things by restoring the ride height. This is why messing about with suspension is fraught with traps for the unwary as WIM said.

Ping me your VIN via PM and I will have a look on Mercedes parts catalogue for you
I have PM's you, thanks for the offer.

I will get it stripped down tomorrow and check what parts i currently have ie springs n shocks and pads, then i can make a decision and go from there. I will let you know what i have!

just looking at my file, all springs and shocks were replaced in 2010, invoice doesn't say with what, but i am assuming they were a matched set, if i could just put a thicker pad in that would be great as im sure the shocks and springs are fine only done 10,000 miles since i bought it in 2011!

Thanks for the VIN seems its not that straight forward for your car

I have to do some odd points gathering exercise based on option to calculate sprint rates !?!, however, looking at the process i am think these are your original numbers.

I have based this on Rear Wheel Drive & not 4Matic
And no self levelling suspension.

If you have either of the above let me know and I will look again.

Front Springs Sport: A124 321 28 04
Front Springs Std: A124 321 21 04

Rear Springs Sport: A124 324 28 04
Rear Springs Std: A124 324 21 04

There is also a harder spring option but its not applicabel to your car, however, soemtimes these thing can work just fine, let me knwo if you need more info

Cheers

wow thats awesome, thankyou very much. Would i be right in saying the sport options were the "Sportline" equivalent? or just a sportier standard spring?

Yes no 4 matic or air suspension.

Having now got the car up, it looks like I have H&R FX Springs MB124/1 VA ( E) and as they are silver i think H&R shocks but i cannot see any markings yet.

Also i have 3 pips spring pads, I think i may keep the same set up but change for 4 pip pads for now to get it through the MOT but i will reserach changing the springs.

Renewing the control arm/bushes and spring pads will surely have some difference as there will be no sagging or crushed spring pads?

I think mine is lower than that, so hopefully just worn out components, the bolt holding the ball joint is fighting me at the moment
i
If we are talking about a tapered joint often a sharp blow to the side of the joint will break the taper once its under tension.

No its the bolt that goes through the hub and clamps to the top pin of the ball joint looks like its rusted fast, tried heat but that hasnt shifted it, just applied loads more penetrating fluid and having a cuppa!

Success and failure! Well after the mammoth job, which shouldn't have been a big job i swapped out the control arms and replaced, took a day and a half to remove and replace most of the time was spent on removing 1 bolt and doing a few touch ups with some stone chip whilst i had the springs out.

Couldn't have done it with out some air tools/impact gun. How i did it in the end, tapping around the bolt nut and joint with a metal hammer to knock out any rust then soak the hell out of it with penetrating fluid and then but about 10 mins of backwards forwards with the impact gun and ALOT of penetrating oil and we are done.

Failure well as it too far longer and all of the components were fine except the control arms i just put it all back together! ride height has improved about 15mm i guess due to all the sagging bushes and ball joint and no more little knocks and feels good. Well worth the effort and i can always swap out the springs at a later date.

But boy do these get rusty underneath, the suspension mounts are fine just the components and bolts take a hammering my advice would be swap them out as soon as possible, and soak the ball joint bolts for about a week beforehand! then use some copper grease on the bolts for when you have to do it again!

Thanks for your help on this one, the spring numbers are very useful.
