I've got a creaking/squeeking noise started on the front suspension possibly n/s (when in car it sounds like its from the passenger footwell). If you turn the wheel to the left, you can hear a squeeking/craunching noise, you also get the noise when you bounce the car. i can't find anything obviously worn, no play in ball joints etc. Its driving me mad, when there's no signs of any thing wrong, any ideas?

Antiroll bar bushes are the most common ones to make a noise in my experience with W124's. Easy to change too. Not so sure they make a noise when turning the wheel though - have you checked your power steering fluid level?

Squirt a little wd40 on to one bush at a time until the noise goes and you'll have pinpointed the problem. You need to change the bushes though as the WD is only a very temporary fix.

No its not the power steering, the noise comes from the suspension area, not the pump. I'll WD40 the bushes in a bit, and see if its quieter tonight when i go to work. Would the ARB bushes make a noise when turning the steering though?

Broken spring? Sometimes not easy to see as they often break just where they sit on the suspension arm. Are you sure its not the lower ball joint where the suspension arm meets the hub assembly--check very carefully as they have been known to break suddenly with no warning except to go noisy like you describe. item 62 here http://www.detali.ru/cat/oem_mb2.as...GM=717.413&CT=F&cat=44R&SID=33&SGR=030&SGN=01
Are the rubber boots ok with no signs of grease leakage in the area?

Well theres no sign of leakage on the joint, but at a tenner they probably worth changing as its done 202k. Are they easy to change?

So, if I bought a new wishbone from GSF, I take it that would have the ball joint pre fitted making the job easier?

Don't know the answer to that one-best to phone GSF to check. If they came with a new ball joint and new inner bushes that would save a lot of hassle. The inner wishbone bushes do have eccentric bolt mountings to adjust the camber/castor so you would have to get the car tracked after fitting a new wishbone arm. The minimum disturbance is to compress the spring and then drop the wishbone arm on the car and press in a new ball joint in situ using the correct press fittings. If the inner bushes are worn then that's different of course. They are quite difficult to fit without a press also so unless they need renewing??

Ah, I'll try it tomorrow with the wd40'ed bushes and see what happens. If it still squeaks I'll inject some oil into the ball joint, and see if that does it. In which case me thinks this will be a rare occasion when I'll get a garage to do some work for a change. Any indie's in the Coventry area?

Right just rang my local trustworthy garage, and he wants £75 all in per side. I'm not going to bother looking at it for that price, if it is the ball joint.

Trust me when I say its cheaper to fit a new ball joint to an existing arm than replace the arm, taking into account that re cambering your front end is going to set you back the thick end of £150. Just mark the bolt eccentrics before removing and you will save that £150 ish. Please make sure you use a proper spring compressor as your life is worth more than your car.

Blasted the ARB bushes with wd40, drove to work this morning, and no noise. So new bushes ordered, and i'll see if that cures it.
thanks for the advice, Dean

Right new bushes fitted, they were worn oval in the middle, and a new steering damper fitted, as it was completely shot. So, hopefully it will be quiet when I go to work tonight.
