W124 Rusty inner wings

CKLclive

Hi Chris, its a common problem on 124's and can be fixed cutting out the rust /welding new piece in preparing the surface and painting, done one a couple of months ago for Billy124 on his coupe

Very pleased with the results too!

The motor went through some extensive corrosion work and treatment this summer just gone.

We specifically concentrated on all the usual and common 124 corrosion woes and got it all delt with.

Summer 2011:

  • All four Jacking Points treated. Corrosion on the sill around the points cut out and new metal welded in place.
  • Rear fender arch lips treated after I had a lip roll
  • Washer bottle grommet area in engine bay treated. Corrosion cut out and new metal welded in
  • Front wings removed, treated in anti rust. Fender lips again treated after lip roll
  • Inner wing skins treated in anti rust
  • Rear inner quarter panels and drain grommets left/right corrosion cut out and new metal welded in
  • Inner rear light cluster edges treated and sealed for water ingress prevention
  • Areas of wheel well treated and a light blow over in body colour
  • Driver side footwell corrosion (sill area) treated with new metal welded in and treated ( http://www.mbclub.co.uk/forums/bodywork/102710-w124-owners-anyone.html)
  • Cavity wax injected into the sills
  • Front lights, front bumper and rear bumpers removed to treat inner skins and mounting areas of the body
  • Front bumper re-sprayed due to stone chips.
  • Plastic claddings and sills re-sprayed in monotone effect to the rest of the body.
As far as corrosion goes now, the car is basically treated and rust proofed. It also compliments the underseal waxoyl job carried out prior to this job.

I am glad that some members are spending time and trouble to get their W124s sorted out body-wise. They are great vehicles and do not deserve to rust away.

Keep up the good work.

Well had a good look yesterday and yup all 3 jacking points are no where to be seen! and 1 is well on its way out.

rear inner arches bubbling round the grommet

Any where else I should look?

I was thinking I would take off all the plastic and have a good clean, then focus on the drain holes and wait until after the winter for the rust work then get it all done in 1 go, any thoughts?

Clive I will be giving you call and probably dropping over sometime for a chat.

Question- I dont mind spending a grand to sort out her rust, I paid £2k for her and love her so I reckon I would get my money back ISH. I just don't know how solid the rest of the car is?

All seems lovely and working but the bad bits are as follows:

AC not working- Diavia system little light just flashes
Central air vents just blows cold air all other vents blow hot air.
Front and rear screens have slight milking around the edges means the rear heater does not work bar a few lines.

everything else works great. Interior ( cream) is really nice and tidy colour is great azurite blue, sunroof works well and has really nice AMG alloy's nicely lowered and a handmade Stainless Exhaust so someone has spent a shed load of money on it just should have got the rust sorted first!!!!!!!!!!!

I think this is the start of a labour of love.

Chris

Billy the car looks good nice job, I know I shouldn't ask and tell me if you dont want to but what did that little lot cost you.
Your car looks the same colour as mine fantastic colour.

Centre vents are meant to only blow cold air.
Delamination of the screens can be a sign of rot on the surround. Repairable if caught in time. The rear screen is very pricey to replace.
Jacking points are usually repairable. The rot tends to be just on the sill itself rather than the actual structure that holds the weight of the car.
Good luck

Cheers Chris,

im just glad its all proofed, i dont have to worry about the comming months too much now.

As the work was quite extensive and perhaps a PIA at times, clive assured me that she didnt cause him too much of a headache.

As im a picky lil so and so, I basically told Clive all the areas that needed working on and any that he may spot that i wasnt aware of.

You will find the rates competitive especially as i am in london going out of town usually does the trick. You will be happy with costings and the work carried out I assure you.

When getting work like this done, just budget for some nasties, I was lucky in my case as apparantley she didnt open like a can of worms. But ive seen/heard some horrors!

P.s. the centre air vents blow cold, its meant to do this. All 124's do it. so no worries there.:thumb:

All good recommendations I will pay him a visit.

Thanks for the cold air blowing thing, one thing off the list!

Billy seen your latest car picks and it looks amazing, mine looks close but underneath and on close inspection is way off yours.

These cars just look so good So will stick with it and get it sorted.

It will be worth it in the end and a job well done, think I should just specialise in ckl.s and 124.s then :thumb:
