Hi All,

I have recently bought a 1983 W126 from ebay, it was creatively described but we wont go into that.

The aim is to bring the car upto a standard where it will go on for a few more years as I think its on the cusp of being a donor car.

I have changed the ATF and filter which has improved the shifting massively and I have just ordered a new K1 spring which I hope will fix the flaring between 2nd and 3rd.

Does anybody know how i might be able to find out the spec of the car I have, exact transmission type etc as im a bit blind at the mo.

I also want to change the plastic chain guide rails as I believe that if these go they can kill the engine. Any recommendations where I might be able to get these from?

I have seen them in the link below but I wasnt sure about the quality of febi blistein

Timing Chain Guides for MERCEDES-BENZ S-CLASS Sedan (W126) 380 SE,SEL (126.032) - from 12.1979 204 hp

Also I was wondering if I need to change all 5 or just the 4 cheaper ones, im going to be chainging the bits from the top of the engine

Any help appreciated

Cheers

Ivan

febi bilstein are original, you will have no issues. I dont think they will all be applicable for your car.

If you post up the VIN someone will run & post the build sheet spec for you.

Thanks for the quick replies I guess I just need to find out which of those guides I need.

My VIN is WDB126003322047598

cheers

That VIN doesn't compute. If I take our one '0' I get this.

Some info missing 'cos it's so old. Google MB option codes for translation of the numbers in the SA code. Looks to be v. well spec'ed - climate control, two tone horn, double mirror & lots of other stuff that was expensive to add.

HTH.

Thanks for that Neil, yes sorry my fat fingers added an extra 0.

It makes me a little sad to think how nice it must have been new and what its current condition is.

Working on it though you can tell it was built to last, sadly tinworm has set in to the passenger side rear arch amongst the other faults it has.

These are a lovely old car.
We used to have a 380SE and ran it for about 8 years until the advancing rust finished it.
I wish I'd had the time to sort it ... Alas
