Hi all,

Can someone please shed some light on a matter for me...

Whilst doing some routine check on the engine oil, water etc, i noticed patches of oil around the outside of the rocker cover. There are alot of drible marks running down towards the manafold and wet patches of oil too which are semi dried up.

Going back afew weeks ago, i was driving the car on a long trip and notice a slight smell of burning oil, as i only do something like 50/100 miles per week in it, i thought nothing much of it.

When i parked the car and got out, i saw slight smoke coming out under the front end, passenger side. It disappeared quickly, i did investigate and saw nothing at that time.

I thought best to get it checked out but have not had time.

Can this be the rocker cover gasket thats away !

Its got 124000 on the clock and never had any engine trouble before.

I know i get paranoid at the slightest issue regarding my W126 as its my pride apart from my Bmw E34 540i V8.

Any useful tips will be appreciated. I did see something callled "Lucas" engine oil leak stop, never experimented with such additives and really dont want to.

Thanks in advance

It sounds very much as though the rocker cover gasket is the cause. If so, don't mess about with additives, just replace the leaking gasket and consider doing them as a pair.

Thanks Scott.

Tell me what will be the best place for me to get them, Euro, Gsf or Mercedes themselves.

Also when placing new rocker cover gaskets, would i need any sealent or such to close the cover shut tight or will the gaskets do the job itself. I have heard about these sealents that are put on the covers before sealing as it provides a air tight seal...

Is all that just bull or does it matter... Never done a gasket before and will love to do this myself.

Thanks

Euro Car Parts should be a good bet especially if you use the discount code available to forum members.

I've replaced various rocker cover gaskets over the years without using any sort of sealant but I've never done one on a Mercedes so I can't advise whether any would be necessary on your car.

Non-setting sealant such as Hylomar Blue can only be a benefit to the finished job. Just follow the instructions and hey presto, no leaks.

Hi get gaskets from
Merc and get new copper washers 4 per bank no need for sealent

I have recently done this and it is fairly easy, the seals are excellent sealers when new as they are U shaped and fit on to the cover very neatly, NOT like some I have done that have to be held in place as you are doing the job.
Andymerc is right too dont skimp on the copper seals either.
I got mine from my local MB and I think about 30quid ish

Thanks all, really appreciate all the advice :-)

Will get the gasket and copper washers from merc then and get this done on the weekend, weather permitting.
