I just had my W140 Mercedes S320 MOT'd and it passed with no problems, but when I went to pick it up the Key fob did not open the central locking as usual to get in so I opened the door with the key got in and tried to start the car. All the lights and electrics fire up fine and the pressure pumps close the doors but the engine does not start, not even a sound. Its as if the engine is permanetly immobilised. The radio, wipers and lights all work.

Totally confused - Can anybody advise?

remote doesnt do anything at all?

1) replace batteries
2) open door and zap the mirror twice quickly
3) ign on
4) start

try the spare key?

I tried that and no joy, I called the RAC and he said there was no signal comming from the infa red in the fob, I have been advised to get a new key which will cost £105 and than have it programmed to the car. Key takes 5 days to order from MB.

I have no spare key, at £105 per key I'm not suprised.

I believe a W140 uses infra red and Radio.. primarily radio unless the battery is flat or something (sorry I can't be more helpful).. so don't take what the RAC dude said as necessarily true.

You can test the infra-red signal out of a key with a camera phone. Point it at the camera and press the button, and you should be able to see the signal sender diode flashing.

Don't know if this relates to W140, but the W210 keyfob transmitter and the security system's receiver sometimes need to be resynchronised. This is explained in my owner's manual and it worked for me. Might be worth investigating. Otherwise, call a friendly M-B service manager first before laying out cash!
