You can stop it reading lateral acceleration by rotating it on its mountings 90 degrees around a vertical axis. It will then input into the ECU acceleration and deceleration as lateral accelerations but ignore actual lateral accelerations - unless the sensor is configured to measure in all directions. Unlikely if it is true to its name.
My ESP is messed up anyway, yesterday it just locked the driver's side front caliper for a fraction of a second and then the BAS/ESP came on whilst driving on a straight road for an hour already! It was kind of scary.
