Our W164 ML went in to the main dealer for a service on Friday, and the following evening the power tailgate closes but the latch won't lock - the motor which closes the tailgate carries on whirring and beeping for a few seconds before giving up. If I ly it failed during the service then they could have fixed it!

Mobilo sent an RAC patrol this morning, a very nice bloke, but after lubricating the latch he just scratched his head and said would be a main dealer job. Rather than leave it the garage over the Christmas break I thought I'd ask the great and good on MBClub, any ideas?

Lot of info on u tube about that, different parts can brake

There are probably other videos apart from those listed below.
W211 W164 have same lock.

Thanks Dec, that will give me something to watch when the same old films are on the tale again! :)

Rob could it be they slammed the boot manually shut after opening it during the service to say check the spare wheel etc? Hence damaging it, as although I believe you should be able to manually close it without any damage, I have seen threads where people have reported weird things happening after manually closing theirs by accident etc.

Sorry my punctuation/sentence structure is appalling but it’s 3:06am and I’m practically half asleep :D

Thanks Abs, yes quite possibly. It could be a coincidence too. Unfortunately there's often a sharp rise in the frequency of coincidences after trips to the dealer, the dentist, etc :)

Yes it’s annoying isn’t it Rob! I hope it can be resolved cheaply, Perhaps a replacement used motor could be a more economical repair?

have a great Christmas today :)

Dropped it in to the dealer this morning, and they diagnosed a faulty lock/latch. There would be a long wait if they ordered the part, so they sent someone over to collect a replacement from another dealer who had one in stock. Now fitted, normal service has now been resumed (£366 later).

I had a similar reaction. That was with a discount too!

Ridiculous mate, but what can we expect with main dealers and their extortionate prices :wallbash::wallbash:

At least it’s fixed now though :)

I would say that is quite a normal price you got. I paid similar money to fix mine several years ago (with a genuine MB lock) and that wasn't through a dealer either. The lock itself costs like £200 if I remember correctly and to install it you obviously have to tear down the inside of the door so there is some work involved. Besides, the plastic clips on the inside of the door break easily so normally that has to be replaced as well (not a high cost though but still).
