I have a 1997 W202 that turns over but will not start. I noticed that the rear view mirror LED stays solid red after unlocking with the remote. Could this be why it will not start?
It's possible. From what I remember when I had a '97 202, the key and car can get out of sync with their security handshaking. When that happens the car doesn't see the correct key code and will not start. The process for synchronisation is detailed in the owner's handbook. If you don't have one I have no doubt the interweb will be the fount of all knowledge.
Note 1: Aim transmitter at a receiver and briefly press the transmit button twice. Within 30 seconds, insert new key in steering lock and turn to position 2.
Note 2: Aim transmitter at inside rear view mirror receiver and briefly press transmit button twice. Within 30 seconds, insert key in the steering lock and turn to position 2.
It flashes green like you've said above and now the remote central locking works fine but alas the red LED on the rear view mirror remains constantly on.
Should it remain constantly on?
It turns over no problem but it won't fire up, all the while the red LED stays on.
Should it not go out or perhaps should be green for go to fire up?
Very strange. No, the red light shouldn't stay on.
In normal operation, the red light will flash when locking and then go out. The green will flash and go out when unlocking, and they will flash alternately for a short while if the key fob battery is low. I've never known one to have the red light just constantly on .
Definitely sounds like the cause for your won't start, but it's not a normal fault.
there is a Diode in the rear view mirror, I recall this happened to my old C36 and my local indie opened the rear view mirror and replaced the diode. its all linked to the immobiliser

I replaced the fuel pump and filter thinking it might be that. i couldn't hear the pump making any noise on ignition position 2. (like my motorcycle does) Replacing the fuel pump cured the start up problem and now it runs. Hurrah. However, the red LED is stil staying on, bizarre, thanks for your help Alps and RogerSausage and I'll look into the diode in the mirror at some point but just chuffed it now goes
