Please excuse my ignorance when my cars in auto you can push the gearstick to the side and the display comes up with D4 D3 etc are these just what gear you are in as sometimes they don't correlate with the display at the top of the dash?
thanks

It stops the gearbox going into higher gears

In D the car will change into top gear be it 5th, 7th etc when able.

The display will show D, however, if you push the lever to the left once and release it then it will change down one gear , if you hold it left for around half a second it will change to the lowest gear permissable for the road speed. If the display shows "3" for example then the car will only be able to select gears 1,2 or 3

Pushing it right will produce an up-change (assuming road speed allows), you cannot drop in to a gear too low for the road speed as the transmission ECU will not allow it, you also cannot select Reverse when moving as the ECU will only allow this when at rest.

D4, D3 etc only shows the highest gear the car will go into, it does not show which gear you are actually in. Annoys the hell out of me, as my other car is also tiptronic, but in manual mode the display shows which gear you are in! TBH about the only time I use the tip feature of the S204 is for engine braking on a steep downhill, other than that I leave it in D and use the kickdown if I want to accelerate hard. Blows the soot out of the exhaust and annoys the guy behind!

Thanks guys I'm still learning will get there soon...I hope

But you not in manual mode, unless you have the M button, you are in automatic restricted range mode and so the display shows to highest range permitted. You don't need to know what gear you're in.
Manual mode is only possible by selecting M with the mode button,. Then you get the actual gear displayed.
