Hi,

I do have strange problem with my W208 soft top. Roof is opening just fine, but I cant close it by switch S84.

S84 switch for open/close operations is doing 1 s selftest while power up without propblems.

s84 Switch is fully lighted all the time when i am trying to close the roof

Compartment cover is trying to open by lowering a bit while i am trying to close the roof but during this prosess compartment cover is not opening at all as during the opening process. so when to roof is in comparment cover is not opening and i believe this is causin error code due to too long opening time.

DAS is showing error code B1650 limit switch, but I cant see more accurate what exctension code. I have checked all the limit switch according WIS resistance and voltage test and all of them seems to work correctly.

Any ideas what could be done next would be so great.

I’m going to need the extension code, 2 digits after the B1650 to help you with this I’m afraid

Thank you so much

It was so that DAS was not able to access my rollbar/soft top module. Basic code B1650 was possible to read by hhtwin. I am not sure how to access for that more accurate exctension, but i will try to find something.

Is there any list of possible causes which could prevent the cover opening when the soft top is inside of the compartment cover ?

If it only faults when the roof is stowed maybe check that it isn’t pushing on the luggage blind and disturbing that switch. I have fixed a lot of these roofs over the years. They are quite complex. I have a work sheet that helps, but you need the extension code. The B1650 is very vague and won’t point you far. The most common issue with these is a sensor/switch on the left hand bow ram that buckles in the middle. Other common faults are with the bow lock on the rear deck which can leak or the switch go bad. The deck latch between the rear headrests has two iterations, one with a switch in it and one without, but generally they dont go wrong. Wiring that runs near the right hand deck hinge can break where it goes up and down. Not common, but seen a few. The ECU themselves can go bad, usually by signalling the same fault with a switch despite all checks of wiring and switch to be perfect. This is most commonly caused by jump starting or battery disconnect/reconnecting. It seems that ageing capacitors inside can be spiked by this. This was very common on older A124 and R129 back in the day. A208’s seem to do it now too. Parts for these cars are also becoming hard to find. Many bits are now discontinued by Mercedes, and secondhand parts are going mad money.

Don’t know if you can see from that, but 1650 is a vague guide. Other number pins it down

Thank you so much of your help and knowledge.

1. luggage blind is overwritten by instaling a big nut on the bling pin hole.

2. all limit switch from the roof mechanics and roll bar has resistance measured independently and with wiring to connector N52. correct operation by voltages is also tested by all the limit switch according the extra instructions seen on the WIS DTC memory diagnosis instruction.

But it is very good to know that still they can be faulty. I have used lots of time to test them already by i must continue then.

The only error code that was generated by hhtwin was this B1650, I really would like to see the better extension number. I tought that if DTC memory diagnosis instructions for blind B1650 is including all the tests and measurements that extensions 00-12 would include separatelly that would have been enough. of course i would know what might cause the error with the extension that is true. Still guesing that B1650_06 the maximum allowed time for soft top triggering of a soft top compartment open limit switch (S83/5) is causing the error code, because this is after everything is stopping and anything more is not happening.

So I have to work more with these ones.

From the other hand WIS soft top diagnosis trouble shooting document is giving for the sympton "Steady light of malfunction indicator lamp in soft top operation swich (S84) the vechicle is at a standstill , power soft switch in not actuated"

That is party true. There is steady light not blinking (S84), but the cover is party actuated (Compartment cover is pulled inside a bit, but not pushed out at all). Even with a little help of mercedes special tool...

Cure for the sympton. " soft top or soft top compartment cover impropely locked, line or fuse circuit 30" I cant understand better what is circuit 30. There is also instruction to check locking mechanism. I can see both limit switch working well, but lock is requiring a good pull when operating by hands even when the hydraulic fluid is released. There is also insturction to read out HHT actual values. I cant understand what that means.

Also some forums are saying the there are other equimpent like checking that rear windows are low included for the procedure. I am not sure that if something happens in compartment cover lock could any external equipment like window or Rollover bar affect for the operation after that. Or is is just the chain of limit switch if the procedure of compartment cover opening is already started.

And yes, i have seen the current prices of the sparepart. There is no need to fix my roof anymore if i have to pay more than value of the whole car to try some spare parts for the fixing a problem. Shame because car is so nice and i like it.

This is why good expert knowledge is in great value. So Thank you once more a lot.

Unknown term HHT might mean Hand Held Tester, which i do not have, so that is not helping at this point.

It is Hand Held Tester. Sadly I am old enough to remember exactly what that is ;)
These days it runs as a simulation within DAS when required
