Am I right in thinking that on my '03 CLK with Thermatic a/c I only have the one cabin filter above the battery?

Is it the fancier Thermotronic system that has an addition filter behind the glovebox?

Correct.

Also, when ordering the cabin filter, make sure that you are ordering the correct part number for an RHD car - because on LHD cars the blower and filter are on the other side, and the RHD filter's shape is a 'mirror-image' of the LHD one.
