(French person so sorry for the English)

Hi, I’m about to buy a w212, but the rotation function on the command knob seems dead, a known problem here I suppose. I juste wanted to know if I had to replace it fast or if without this rotation function almost all of the command functions (change radio, set gps…) will work ? Thanks !

Your written English is very good!

Is this a private sale or from a dealer? If the latter can it be fixed as part of the sale?

Dealer, but I think that now I signed, I can't negotiate, but for my question, what do you think ? Concretely, without this scrolling function, assuming that vertical and horizontal works, what can't I do ?

Its not bad job to change, lotsa good videos available, aluminium shafts cheap on ebay.

It's not a bad job, though you are taking the (not very high) risk that there's something else at fault, e.g. the CONAND unit itself.

I am not suggesting that you shouldn't have bought the car, just that when buying a car with a known fault, you should factor the risk element as well.

Ok thanks a lot ! But concretely, what can’t I do without the slide function ? Except the navigation zoom I’m aware of.

The W212 had NTG4.5 until late 2015, when it got the NTG5*1. What year is the car? 2016 was the last year of the W212.

So it's the pre-facelift model, and will have either Audio20 or COMAND NTG4.

If it's COMAND, then the unit will have a large PCMCIA bay, that's how you recognise it:

I can confirm you that mine is equipped with COMAND, so NTG4. So ? Thanks for your answers !

There are plenty of videos on Youtube about changing the Comand NTG4 control wheel shaft, I had the same problem on my S204 C220 with NTG4. Bought a replacement aluminium shaft (original is plastic hence breaks!) but the job looked too finicky for my sausage fingers so I had a local car audio place do the job for me.Be aware that the last satnav update for NTG4 is 2018-19 and no more will be issued by MB, also that there are 2 versions of NTG4 update DVD's - -204 and -212, they are not interchangeable so if buying, make sure you get genuine MB NTG4-212!

And without the scroll, what can’t I do concretely ? Assuming I’m gonna wait a little bit before changing the piece.
