Hi everyone,

Was really curious about your MPG (if you own a W212 facelift) on really short journeys, long journeys and average.

A bit of story:

W212 facelift 2014 blueefficency E220d.
Using only SHELL FuelSave diesel

Recently start to get some weird numbers on mpg. Due to WFH change, don't use the car that much, mostly short journeys - but 160 miles on a half a tank? Insane...
Before, use to work in town centre and had some travel to do like 25min drive in through town centre(stop/start/traffic ofc) and a some weekend long journeys from time to time. The best i had was 230miles on a half tank. Which, i was told is ok due to spending most of the time in the traffic in town. But the numbers i get now... :wallbash:

The car is smooth and always serviced on time, never had a problem expect for:

Just recently had some weird rattling noise coming from the engine, doesn't sound like chain, belt or tensioners. After a bit of google, found this -

got an identical sound. Also found this, https://static.nhtsa.gov/odi/tsbs/2017/MC-10119692-9999.pdf , which actually explains the cause and how to diagnose the fault etc. However, i don't think this could impact fuel consumption. Booked for check up next week. It would be nice to hear your thoughts and maybe some experience. Cheers.

My commute is 35 miles (each way) along 70mph A roads and at 60mph my 2015 E220 wagon gets 60mpg, I think the gearbox locks up. In town I can sink into the 20’s with the gear box in slushy mode. I regularly 150 miles out of each quarter of a tank and fill up at 590-600 miles. I know nobody buys a merc for economy but the 220 is much better than the 350. I was talking to a bloke with the same car as me but a 350 and he was getting 42mpg on the same commute as me. I think keeping on top of engine and gearbox oil changes helps as does general maintenance. Hope this helps

If you have been looking at fuel economy in the recent cold snap and running short stop start journeys then I would just disregard them - the economy would be awful in any car let alone a pretty big diesel auto.

ps the way forward is a small EV for those stop start short trips and a big diesel or petrol auto for the longer journeys.

You really cannot form an accurate judgement on "half a tank" figures. Fuel gauges are notoriously non linear.

A tank filled to the cut off and then refuelled (preferably at the same pump) to the same point and dividing the fuel used by the mileage covered is the only accurate way..

Of course it is now winter and we have been experiencing extreme low temperatures which play a significant role in how efficient diesel engines are. Diesel mpg especially on a short journey in winter will be appreciably lower

The vehicle may also have a faulty thermostat.

I own a e220 cdi amg sport, I had a stage 1 remap done. I do alot of miles each week up and down the country. I get on average between 65-70mpg on the motor way and around 45-50mpg in the city.

Thanks guys for the reply.
The post was from the November, when the weather was decent. But nvm… 😂

Any advises regarding the sound from the video? Had a check from locals they say sounds like a normal diesel engine. Which i disagree. As you could clearly here a bit rattling sound more like a “metal in a can” kind of sound.
