W212 Steering Wheel column loose when locked?

Hi all,

My steering wheel column is loose despite being in locked position. I’ve tried adjusting in and out, locking/unlocking etc but there is still play in it. I can remove the play by sticking something between column and dash (currently using a wall plug!) but unsure if this is an issue with the locking mechanism itself or something with the actual steering column?

Has anyone has this issue before? Any ideas?
