Hi guys, hows use doing? Got a problem with my s500 w220. Its a long story il try make it quick. The car used to belong to my dad and it developed a wiper fault. He took the car to mercedes and its been going back and forth for over a year and now he has given up with it. Mercedes cant trace the fault at all.

What happens is the wipers might work for an hour/day/week but then they will stop. If you reset the battery they go back to working for a short period of time.

During its time in mercedes it has had loads of parts fitted the most recent (few weeks ago) was a front sam unit. I wil need to check invoices for what else has been changed but most things have been changed to do with the wipers.

Mercedes next part to change would of been the wiper motor but i collected the car before throwing even more money at it. I have a parts car aswell a w220 s500. So last night i swapped over a working wiper motor. Wipers worked perfect for a few hours.....and yup you guessed it stopped working. I am now close to breaking the car!!!

Does anybody have any advice on what it could be? I have a parts car so sont mind swapping parts over to try it. I have had a look on the net and the only things i can think of that havent been changed are :

The switch its self
Spring on the steering wheel? ( not sure if thats true or not?)
Im gonna swap the relays over just to make sure

As i say im out of ideas so any advice would be great. Star cant pick up the fault so im not to keen on taking it to a garage as the car has had more money spent on it than what its worth.

If anybody off here helps me cure it i will paypal you some beer tokens!!

Thanks james

Hi, with out knowing what has been changed and going by what you have just said, I would probably change the switch itself next just to try.

After that, its time to look at the wiring schematics and go through the wiring and also find out what control units the wiper signal pass through!

I'm sure once you can give more details something will come to light though!

I have had this before and it was caused by a faulty ignition switch. Strange but true!

Have you swapped the relays?
Might as well try that first as you have one already.

Its also had a new ignition switch and key lol. Il try getbthe invoices from my dad to see what has been changed. Il try the switch next then, is it easy to remove?

Thanks james

Just got in it and new day a new problem....

Display defective visit workshop
Side light out
Hand brake light staying on
No wipers
Steering wheel wont move up/down
And left hand side head light is staying on

Anybody had problems like this? Any ideas what if can be?

Thanks james

Water in a SAM unit?

The front right SAM is responsible for the wipers IIRC

Im away go down to my workshop and have a look. Has anybody came up with a way of stopping water getting i to the sam units? Or any tips?

Thanks james

Had wiper problem on my previous w220
Faulty motor
I'm surprised that MB couldn't diagnose
My mech said its common oroblem

Changed motor last night problem is still there.

Another quick update after is hissy fit earlier i disconnected the earth lead off the battery and left it 10mins. Put it back on everything returned to normal.....drove down to my workshop in the rain wipers working perfect just arrived and wipers have stopped again. No other faults showing im gonna have a go at changing the wiper switch and see what happens.

Cheers james

Another update:

Swapped over both wiper relays.....car worked perfectly for 3/4days. Yup you guessed it the phantom fault has returned no wipers or steering wheel adjustment.

Gonna swap over the wiper switch wish me luck.

Cheers james

Right finally found some of the invoices this is what has been changed so far :

2 front sam units (MB)
Ignition barrel + key (MB)
Brake light switch (MB)
Door control module (MB)
Wiper motor (myself)
Wiper relays (myself)
Alternator just incase (myself)

Fault is still there so im deffo doing the switch next just didnt have time yesterday. Anybody have any other ideas what it could be? Im running out of things to change lol.

Cheers james

What about the sensor on the windscreen for automatic operation ?

Havent swapped that yet...are they common to break? I think the only things left to swap over is the wiper stalk and the rain sensor then im all out of ideas.

Cheers james

Swapped over the rain sensor tonight when i had a spare half hour. Didnt change a thing but i now have a new problem. The wipers are on all the time now even with the key out and stalk at 0. It just started doing this as i was heading to the workshop to swap over the rain sensor.

Im gonna swap over the switch tomorrow and if this doesnt sort it, i will just break the car as i have now ran out of ideas and patience.

Cheers james

James I have the same issue as this post. Did you ever sort the problem.
