Hi Guys,

I recently purchased a W221 S500 Japanese Import. 2006

I've seen this question raised a few times but never found an answer.

Is it possible to change the Japanese Comand Module to a EU one?
If so is it straight forward or does it need programming .etc?

I would much rather go down the route of a aftermarket head unit but that seems impossible with these...

I just want it so I can listen to the Radio, if possible DAB and/or my own music from my phone.

Any advice would be much appreciated! Thanks

The Comand unit needs to be changed out for a European one. After market is a non starter on the W221 i'm afraid. The unit will almost certainly need coding to the car for the specific option you have.

Thanks for the reply! Would the coding have to be done at Mercedes Main dealer or could a specialist do it?

Thanks

COMAND UK can do it but they are in Lightwater. Well worth the drive :thumb:

Your other problem is that on some of the Japanese cars the phone system is built into the head-unit so if you swop from Jap to EU then you have to retrofit the phone system too - which is not simple or cheap :-(

Thanks guys! And I'm not overly fussed about the Phone system as long as I can play CD's, which currently I can't, I do however think this is a seperate problem with the COMAND. Anyone got any ideas about that? After about 20 seconds it comes up saying Device Error .etc. Sorry for changing the topic a bit and thanks for the replies!

Yes that sounds like a separate problem. Something on the fibre optic network is probably warming up and failing.

Do you think swapping the COMAND wll solve that problem aswell? Or is there a seperate fix for that?

Thanks

Can't really say without seeing car and investigating. Probably not would be my guess, I would be suspicious of something else (such as TV tuner if car has TV?)

Might take it to a specialist for now then just to try and fix the cd player and at least I can play CD's then! I've messaged COMAND UK so I'll see what they say about changing the Unit but no doubt it'll cost a bomb
