1999 C230K Sport
It was dawn and I was just enjoying a nice purple sunset, cruising along at 70 mph in my 99 C230k sport. I was driving down a rather empty 4 lane highway and come up behind this old and tattered albeit lowered and square exhaust adorned e36 M3. It looked beat up, wheels were dirty, wasn't washed, body kit was a little cracked, and looked like it was sagging on one side a little.

So I switch lanes to pass. I think I switched lanes a little too close to him so he thought it was provocation. About 5 seconds later I see his poorly done aftermarket angel eyes fill my rear view mirror fast. I'm thinking "Whoaa, let's go then!" Being an automatic, all i do is drop it into 4th and mash the pedal down. I'm heading north of 95mph getting close to 100, he blows me as if I was sitting still. As i hit 110, i nudge the knob to 5th to ease my lawnmower of an engine to just to see him as a speck in the distance.

About 30 minutes later, driving back at 60 because I was embarrassed that of a such a heavy lost, (I figured a few car lengths was plausible, but a whole freeway?) a wild and brand spankin' new red C250 Turbo Sport Sedan appears out of no were and passes me slowly to the right. I admire it and try figure out just what cosmetic "changes" were made to this new model. I really couldn't tell besides the new led foglamps and bumper. Anyways, I guess I was creeping him out by following so he guns it. I figure, oh what the heck, letsee what this new 250 turbo can do. I gun it after him right away. He stays a little less than half a car length ahead of me and does not have enough room to cut in front of me due to the random semi-truck on the right. I move out of the way to the 3rd left lane giving him room to brake a little and switch before the truck. That was all I needed to stay ahead of him by a whole car for the next mile or so. But boy that car is beautiful!

I'd attribute the win to my BMC airfilter, Upsolute chip and being 200 lbs lighter and having no spare tire or power seats to weigh me down

The later E36 M3 cars are acknowledged as one of the best handling and performing cars there was. In stock form it puts out about 300 bhp with 0 -60 mph in just over 5 secs and an easy top speed of 155mph. A mildly tuned one will run 350 bhp have a 4 second 0 -60 and run to about 172 mph, I suspect this is what you may have encountered? There is no way any 230k engined car would ever get near the E36 M3

As regards the 250 turbo sedan you should have been on pretty level terms which it looks as though you were.

All good fun :D

"It was dawn and I was just enjoying a nice purple sunset" - is a purple sunset a chocolate bar or something?

Here we go again lets take the P*ss out of the OP, saddens me sometimes the way some posters get jumped on and ridiculed on this forum, never used to be like this

And having boxed him in behind a lorry so he had to brake...

Maybe it shows more about how the Mercedes brand has been watered down.

Now and again (and I know its childish) I like to give it the beans at the lights when a GTi type car is along side. Its often fun as my car with its Brake hold / auto actually feels pretty nippy for a bus.

I will even 'have a go' if I know I have no chance just to see what the 'other' car has.

Its good fun now and again on a road I drive regularly with quite a few lights, you even get the thumbs up sometimes from the other drivers.

I would imagine that a C230 is a fair bit off performance wise to an M3 no matter how tatty. Is the C230 the same as the SLK230 as I driven one of them a fair bit. I guess you would need a C32 or 43 to level peg it.

Its good fun but just watch your speed.... as you will not overtake anything if you have to get the bus :)

In principle I agree, but this one was begging for it :o:o

C36 would do the trick, it's what it was designed for! C43/32 is the next generation and level up, more bhp and a LOT more torque. For reference the C32 is similar performance to the E46 M3.

Not in North America which is where I am guessing the OP comes from (unless I am wrong but I can't see a location).

Original E36 3.0 and later 1996 3.2 Evolution produced 240BHP in North America.

Euro ones are 286BHP (6.0s) and 321BHP (5.4s) respectively.

There were some 282BHP Canadian special-import ones.

Despite that, the NA ones are not massively slower (half a second to 60)

I don't know the figures for the OPs car though but I would assume the M3 was modified...

i had an E36 M3, they got tatty and tired an engines got tired very quickly, i moved onto a fiesta turbo, then the C36, they are fast cars and alot of fun, but are old and tired, ur 230K may need a new MAF :)
