Currently got a rattling/bearing type noise from front of engine - first thoughts were pump or fan - anyone else had similar? - done a search but nothing seems to be relevant other than one or two posts but no outcomes to posts after I assume resolving issues.

Was told at last service that viscous fan was always on indicating this could be the problem but does sound like pump to me - is there any way i can determine whether pump or fan?

How easy are either job to do? ie capable for a slightly less competant DIYer with a standard 1/2" socket set and rusty spanners

How expensive? Parts only and full monty fitted?

Anything else while in bits? - belt(s)? coolant change?

Car's a 1998 V6 280

Check the crank pulley as the vibration damper has a nasty habit of breaking up, also check teh drive belt tensioner pulley and bracket.

A stethoscope is a good tool to use when trying to detect a rattle or knock but you need to keep away from the belt and fan.

Just had a look - no way I'm even going to attempt it.

Looks like the back of the fan - don't know what it is called but it is loose:eek: and motion of the belt is causing it rock and roll making the noise - scary now i've seen it - I'll take a picture and point out the bit that is rattling

How do I insert an image? on my PC now but only option is 'URL of image'
???

If you fancy a trip over to Kirkham I will have a quick gander at it for you and tell you how you can do it.

I got mine replaced about 3 months ago. The major problem is getting the viscos fan off. I got the parts from Merc, the water pump is an exchange item so you get money back when you take your old one back ( about £60 from memory after money back ) and i did belt and pully at the same time. I paid a local mechanic £60 to do it - too him and another chap to get the fan off ( wouldnt fancy it myself ) - but after thats done its really very simple took him about 30-45 mins.

Mine sounded like a churning noise and it came and went if that helps - if you dont have astethescope ( who does ! ) then put a screwdriver blade on the pump and put your ear to the end - youll soon know if it is the pump !

Hope that helps ....

Thanks Ian - after having a look it is too daunting a task - last time I tinkered it was a 1256cc Chevette [massive engine bay and tiny engine(simple too) - this is completely the opposite makes me wonder how it got in there in the first place!!!!!]

Could you please price

  • the pump/viscous coupling/coolant change
and
  • check the ATF level - the clunky gearbox we talked about is getting worse
on a 1998 V6

I know you prefer the more mature mtor but I Assume this would be ok

Bump and pics

Sean - The water pump sits directly behind that cover - If the bearings have gone then itll be making an awful noise. I think ( but dont risk your fingers until someone else confirms ) the chap that told me about mine stopped the fan from spinning ( with his hand ! ), enabling him to get a better idea it was definatly the pump.

use a carrot!

Is everybody sure the water pump is behind the pulley on this engine. Usually the water pump is seperate on MB engines and this is just the fan pulley. Also I would expect the pump to be leaking with this much play.

Having the Chassis number of sean's car I can confirm that the water pump is behind the pulley.
