Hi all,

So I detailed my car over the weekend, I noticed upon driving over 60 mph I get a almost windy/rattling sounding noise from what feels like the windscreen (cannot pinpoint exactly where). I pushed the windscreen wipers into full standard lock position, (This seems to of decreased the noise a fairly large amount), is this just a normal noise to hear when going fast?

I also tested the sunroof / and put a tiny bit of WD40 along the metal grove incase this was causing any noise. Upon reading forums, this doesn't appear to be best practice, should I remove this via a microfibre towel and get the proper lubricate/paste?

My windscreen wipers haven't been replaced in at least 2 years (Only do around 3000/4000 miles a year).

Any other tips or advice r.e. Rattling noise and things to check would be great!

WD40 is a Water Displacement spray not a lubricant, so I would recommend removing as best possible and use the correct grease.
As to the wipers, it's not mileage that kills them so much as UV exposure. Do yours have the little MB icon on them? This changes colour to denote ageing. I personally have mine changed every 12m at service time

Thank you for the response. I will try clear it off tomorrow with a MF, would you suggest an APC or just try wipe off?

By correct grease, is this just Mercedes standard, or anything up to par that isn't so costly?

My wipers do have the MB icon, what colour should I look for, I will check them tomorrow in the daylight, sounds like I should get them replaced at my Service B in June!

R.e. the rattling noise, any thoughts? (It is considerably quieter since I adjusted the wiper, but could it be something else still?)

What's the service history on the car? And is it being serviced by main dealer? Or specialist?

The reason for asking is that the pano roof is due lubrication every 3 years. So (assuming average annual mileage) your 2016 car should have had the pano roof lubricated in 2019, and it will be due again later this year.

This is a chargeable item, that is carried-out at each third annual service. The cost is added on top of the service cost (Service Schedule A or Service Schedule B).

If you don't want to wait with the pano roof lubricantion until the next service is due, then you can do it yourself. MB use special lubricant for the pano roof, though you should be able to buy it at the parts counter at your local dealer.

It’s serviced with the main dealer, you are right I’m sure the last Pano service was 2019 (I remember paying extra for it).

I got my quote for Service B this year but they haven’t advised me / included the Pano roof (is this a big additional cost?). Do you have to request or they don’t add automatically?

I might just wait till the June Service and get the roof work added.

Thank you!

This year your car should have Service B (which includes cabin filter replacement), pano roof lubrication, and brake fluid change. The last two items are charged on top of the base Service B cost.

Thank you, I will speak to Mercedes dealership Saturday, as none of these things have been added to my Service B in June.

Added screenshot of all current items for Service due.

I essence, yes, though you could wait until they actually start smearing or become noisy. But 2 years is a good run, so perhaps you should just replace them anyway.

The dealer can do it for you during the service, though it will probably cost £10-£20 more than just being them and fitting them yourself (and obviously it will cost even less if you opt for non genuine wipers e.g. Bosch Aerotwin).

That said, the UV dot on one of my wipers become fully yellow just 2 months after fitting it (genuine brand new MB wipers), while the other is solid black as you'd expect. So if I'm honest, I don't know how reliable the UV dot is.....

Thank you, I will replace this weekend myself and update thread if resolves issue 👍

Does this wiper / price look about right?

When I serviced my sunroof slides I first vacuumed out any grit and debris. Then applied WD40 with a toothbrush as a cleaner. Then cleaned up with kitchen towel. Finally lubed lightly with a high quality thin oil. I used Scottoil chain lube which I had for my bike. I don't like grease because it seems to attract grit and dust.

Which type of WD40 did you use, I’ve seen some people use:

White Lithium Grease by WD-40 Specialist

I might try vacuuming it this weekend to tidy up the mess I made earlier this week 😆

Thanks for the comment!

You really are best off using the recommended lubricant (Mercedes-Benz Gleitpaste, or an equivalent such as DuPont's Krytox).

Mineral-based lubricants can cause issues with non-metallic sliding surfaces and WD40 isn’t, as others have already said, a lubricant.

The Gleitpaste may be expensive (although there are a number of sellers offering suitably small quantities on eBay for less than a tenner), but it is peanuts compared to the cost of repairing a failed roof mechanism.

Understood, I will get Mercedes to do on the June Service 👍 For now I will just leave it be as hardly used during winter and I’ve removed with a MF the residue from my previous use of WD40!

So I went to Mercedes’.

They agreed that servicing roof in June is fine and current setup I’ve done is okay.

They also said the rattling was most likely a loose trim on my roof. We gave it a little bash in to properly push it back (the roof panel by windscreen) and it clipped in / no more noise 👍

My seatbelts were also losing some of traction causing noise, I cleaned them but really need replacement in year or two time. (Bad for a 5 year old car / hardly any mileage).

Mercedes recommend hovering the roof grit out every month or two and just a little brush out until pano roof service very 3 years.

Hope this helps anyone experiencing similar situation.

Whilst using the MB approved grease is the long term way to go, I found that this did not resolve the issue I had with lubrication of my pano roof, whilst application of a spray silicon lubricant did.
