Well, duh!

Hands up who’s happy for a substantial increase in taxation to fund all the things that most/all of us want fixing.

The reality is that most people already feel like they y too much tax - even if they actually pay very little in relative terms.

But think about the reduction in damage due to there being a lot less HGVs on the roads as all the fuel tankers will not be needed anymore.;)

No-one moaned about the extra damage to the roads caused by the trend towards SUVs, which are heavier than the models they replaced. Cars of all flavours have got heavier over the years. I generalise, of course but there are many fossil fuel cars that are heavier than BEVs.

The chart is based on some research done in the 60s, which makes a lot of assumptions, one of which is that all axles are the same. I'm not sure anyone has done any research on whether its weight (force) or pressure that causes the damage. I seem to remember that the Scorpion tank (which weighed a bit) had such a low ground pressure it could drive across swamps without sinking in. Certainly we ran land rovers with different tyre widths in the desert and those with wider tyres didn't "damage" the surface ie get stuck. Put wider tyres on your car and run them at a low pressure and maybe you will do less damage? Tyres are generally wider than they were in the 60s 🤷‍♂️

If the potholes on the crown of that bend aren't bad enough, you really wouldn't want to cut the corner a bit tight and drop a wheel onto that inside edge
Neither would bother me in the slightest - I have sidewall. And that, is why I'm no slower over B-road than the supposed 'performance' lo-pro equipped cars. Really, sidewall is the new performance tyre!

As it happens, on this occasion, Harry's Ferrari was on 205/70VR14 tyres

Who's ever heard of these! Harry comments on the wonderful ride. 👍

Even my C124 is on 60's.

Reminds me... I watched the HG video on the Daytona (that Grober posted) - a beautiful car to behold that would not be better in any way with lower profile tyres fitted to it. Yet, the fashion is for the absurdly unusable for a supposedly superior aesthetic. When you are trounced in the corners in a C63 by a 2.5ton truck on leaf springs running 65aspect ATs, it's time to spend money on driving tuition rather than on shiny shiny and lo-pro.

The issue is that the fashion is dictated by the manufacturers who decide that we all want - not need - ridiculously big diamond cut alloy wheels fitted with road roller wide, Rizzla profile tyres.
Maybe they are right in some cases; some of us want the bling. But a lot of us would equally welcome a wheel and tyre combo that was suitable for the vehicle and practical in everyday use.

To some extent, yes. But there's still a hell of a lot of people who want to go further still - as can be witnessed on this forum. Also visible is those wanting to go in the opposite direction so yes, the OEM fitment didn't serve them well.
It is a fashion thing though but followers of fashion are just that - followers. As a fashion it's beyond passe - heading for caricature. I'd be kinder if I believed the performance capability of lo-pros was actually exploited but all my observations suggest otherwise. Being quick over the ground always demands suitable rubber and when the roads are as pothole strewn as they are, lo-pros are as much use as a chocolate tampon.

I appreciate a nice looking set of alloys as much as the next person and I have to say the 19s on my car fill the arches nicely. But a nice diamond cut 19 and 255/35 tyre doesn't look nearly as nice with a bend in the rim like a banana and a chunk out the sidewall.
Form over function springs to mind, certainly on today's roads.

My daughter's 2012 pug 207 has 65 profile tyres.
I chose it mainly to help the nsf alloy survive her parking though she has got better.,
But the ride, even in a crappy french hatchback is pretty good because of it.

I will be getting a car with higher profile tyres next.

I've seen what I'd like (and it's not a Merc!)

I am not looking
I am not looking
I am not looking ....

But when the time comes, I will be getting 'bigger' tyres.
Probably an SUV o_O

Don’t worry, it’s not as bad as you fear. Only the “driver’s drivers” will stop talking to you, everyone else will be cool with it 😀
