My guess is the hands - free mic also. Normally in the roof area, but your car being a 'vert.........
or the temperature sensor for the climate.
or the Turbo Nutter Go Faster Boost button.

I have the same thing on my 2011 w212 E350. It's a hole in the dash about the size of a 1p, with what looks like a black wire mesh/grill blocking the hole. My best guess was microphone.

It's actually the interior temp sensor. When I wrapped my interior I didn't put that back correctly and it bought up a stored code which went away once I plugged the website back in correctly.

I'm wrapping my trim atm. Is the "black button" removable from the trim or do I have to cut the wrap around it? It looks like it's securely connected to it and I don't want to damage or break it by forcing it. Thanks

From memory it just popped out.
