Can you give a wider picture of where it is and which car please?

A protective cap for a tube in the engine bay ?

What it was attached to (first photo) might provide a clue....

Covering for negative battery pole ?

Those are the connecting points for an external 12V power source, usually the clamps of either jump leads or battery chargers. The brass negative connecting post is an earth, so there's not much need to protect it against accidental earthing. None of my many MB cars have had a protective cap on it, but it may be more common on later models; it seems to be more and more common on cars recently to try to protect even complete numpties, who should not be allowed to walk around unsupervised, let alone drive, against all possible consequences of all actions they might possibly take.

On more mundane cars without a proper German dedicated negative pole, we just used to connect the negative wire to a bolt at the top of the suspension strut. If 'protecting' the negative pole, they might as well protect the entire engine bay... or, in fact, the entire car :D

It's a more modern thing where items under the bonnet are colour coded. Really basic stuff where you can't do any harm is blue (washer fluid), and stuff where it helps to have a bit of knowledge is yellow (dipstick, or in this case, jump starting).
