Hello,
I’m currently considering purchasing a 2005 ML270 CDI and have taken an interest in it. However, I’ve never owned this vehicle before, nor do I have much experience with the 270 CDI engine. What should I pay attention to when buying it? What kinds of problems might I encounter after purchasing it?

Thank you in advance for the information you’ll provide.

I had that engine in my Grand Cherokee....very reliable....ish! !! I replaced all the copper washers that seal the injectors to the head over the time I had it....lucky the smell in the cabin would give it away before the black death got too bad. The only other failure was the low fuel pressure pump......particles of which damaged the high pressure pump (lucky none made it to the injectors). The low pressure pump was cheap....and high pressure pump price was OK as a recon (you can buy rebuild kits but its not an easy job and required operating theatre levels of cleanliness! ). Symptoms where that it got harder and harder to start until it wouldn't without easy start. Other than that it was a good lump......reasonable performance and torque and mpg considering it was in a heavy 4x4 with live axles front and rear!! I wont tell you what killed it as it was a freak one off and it wont happen to you!!! I'd have another.

EDIT....just remembered I had to replace one injector due to excessive leak off/back. Cheap enough for a recon one. It was also causing a long crank.
