What should I do with my e320 AMG?

Another option - just keep driving it until a really nice W211 V6/8 pops up for sale. You can enjoy tinkering about with it but the missus won't be worried about you killing yourself with metal poisoning! Probably won't cost much more than finishing off the 210 properly. Sell the old car with a fresh MOT, it will get something at least.

I would need to sort out some sort of air purification system for the garage if I was to do the respray in there though, which does seem like a lot of bother.

Yeah, was along the lines of what I was thinking, a later model e55 211 perhaps. Or just flog off the wheels / bodykit and see if anyone wants the rest for parts.

Shame you can't force webuyanycar.com to honor their online quotes - they reckon it's worth 7.5k for some reason or another o_O

Yep, either avoid it or make sure you have lots of ventilation. While I only speak for myself, I've had no problems with respiration during welding or painting solvent based paint (nobody uses water based paint here). I've shot a couple of cars in my 2 car garage with the door open and a box fan going to move the air out. Biggest issue was having to deal with a little bit of trash.

Avoid stainless too? Can't grind the chromium out of it... Outside welding is impractical as wind affects the arc...
Proper ventilation system is nice if you have the room for it. Mask sorts it otherwise.

Hopefully I won't ever end up in the situation again, but I'm definitely using my mask if I do have to weld treated steel in the future :)

Didn't even know it was possible to do a clean stainless weld without using Tig?

Yeah, I got pretty good results spraying in my old garage without any special equipment other than a fume mask - it had a corrugated rood and a separate door which you could open at the back, so ventilation was good. Not a great picture, but the wings look really good on the car. That was done with water based paint over cellulose primer - you're pretty much stuck with it if you want a good paint / finish match on a W210.:

But my new garage is almost hermetically sealed - great for keeping the damp out if you're laying up a car for a long period, not so good for home restoration. And I really don't want to risk leaving the door open in case I give any of the neighbors breathing difficulties - most of them are very old and very posh, the human equivalent of ancient monuments. For example one of them's Lady Somethingortheother who used to work at Bletchley Park, and another used to hang out with Henry Moore the sculptor!


Forgot to say, nice work, they're great looking cars :)

It's no problem. Stainless is steel with a touch of Cr flavoring. So it works fine, MIG to steel.
I wouldn't throw in the towel yet, Marc, as there's the arc-eye and 2K paint (iso-cyanides) to experience!

Off-set these risks with the new kitchen strategem?

Ha ha, the kitchen's perfect as it is so that'd certainly worry my other half :D

I could keep Lady Whatsername company if I do experience the joys of 2k inhalation - I could join her for her daily wheezy totter around the estate...

Seriously though, this did give me a bit of a health scare so I might leave anything more involved than giving it a good interior / exterior cleanup for a couple of months and then see how I (and my family) feel.
 
I know how hard and somewhat depressing bodywork can be. Especially when the rust comes back.

If it was me, I'd sell as-is and treat myself to a newer model (I'm talking about the car here).
