Hi I've just been gifted my wife's E350 2011 w212 Avant-garde and want to tart her up a bit. She has standard Mercedes 17" alloys and I was thinking about going to 19" but not sure what tyres would work on those, trying to keep the ride as comfortable as possible if possible.
Thanks for any help given,
Regards Bill.

Stick with 17’s buddy , they won’t crack in the potholes . I was glad yesterday on the M6 that I had my winter 16’s on .
I’ve got Goodyears on my summer 17” wheels . Great tyres .
19’s will decimate the ride quality .

If you want to keep the ride comfortable putting bigger wheels on it is the worst thing to do. Mine's on 18's and I wish it had 17's
This fad for big wheels seems to be a British thing, in Germany & France the cars all seem to have proper sized wheels.
The manufacturers have cleverly sold us the idea that something that is worse is somehow better and worth paying extra for. I bet the tyre manufacturers are in on it as well as they charge more for low profile tyres that wear quicker and get damged easier = more revenue

All the wheel / tyre size combinations that fit the car are listed in the Owners Handbook.

I used to own a W212 E350CDI in Avantgarde spec and the standard 17" wheels gave the best ride quality, but the staggered 18" setup that was standard on the Sport model doesn't sacrifice it too much (imo, of course).

I also owned a couple of W212 E63's on 19" wheels and while the ride quality was OK (albeit the E63 suspension is differently calibrated and uses air springs on the rear) although definitely not as comfortable as on smaller wheels, the big disadvantage was the susceptibility to wheel damage from potholes. My first E63 was on the proper forged AMG alloys that were tough as old boots, but the later facelift car I had was on the cast AMG alloys and buckling / cracks were always an issue.

So in summary, the best ride is on the 17's; the 18's are a reasonable compromise; avoid 19's or anything bigger.

Look on the fuel flap , it's all on there . 👍

The s212 I've just purchased is on 16's cross climate tyres and it rides fantastic. Ok you lose the look and the stance of the car with smaller wheels but you definitely gain on ride quality. My w212 e63 has 19's but as been said the suspension is set up differently on the AMG models. I wouldn't want it any stiffer on the 63. It suits the carrater of the chassis and engine in that particular car in my opinion.

I have a set of 18's and will try them on the e250 once the weather gets warmer to see how they ride on the avantgarde/SE suspension. The bigger wheel does fill the wheel arch much better but it's at a ride quality loss. Each to their own really.

It isn't "all on there" unless you have a special multi-page fuel flap ;)

The tyre pressures may be listed for the different diameter wheels, but the widths and offsets (which are somewhat important know) aren't.

He's asking about tyres afaik.

19s are nowhere near as bad as, everyone says. Perfectly comfortable ride. And looks wise, they absolutely suit the W212.
🙂👍

I didn't notice much of a difference with my c207 on 18 or 19 tbh.

235 35 19 // 255 30 19 dropping to 18's doesn't give much more tyre tbh.

Ride quality isn't all about tyre profile height it's wheel weight too .

Unsprung mass.......

Tyres, probably 235/35/19 front and 255/30/19 rear. That was on my C207 with 8.5x19 alloys all round.🙂

Stick to 17's if you want comfort, especially if you have less than perfect road surfaces.

Go to 19's if appearance and a hard, sporty ride on perfect roads is your priority: perfect for the Autobahns around Sindelfingen.

Ride quality varies with tyre depth and suspension settings. Hang out with BMW or Porsche owners and you'll hear them constantly whinging about ride quality on their large rim wheel / Sports suspension combos.

The manufacturer's wheel & tyre combinations are printed on the car. (Can't remember if it's petrol cap or door jamb on the A212)

(As a BTW, the C207 is called an E class, but is a completely different vehicle, it's a coupe, based on the shorter C class)

If in doubt, just test drive a used W212 Avantgarde on 19's.

Bear in mind that brand new tyres do ride better than six year olds
