Will a battery change activate the need for radio code?

2001 W203 - My car will need a new battery soon, and I'm just curious, when it's swapped over, will that trigger the need to enter a security radio code which I don't have?

As far as I know you only need to recalibrate windows steering wheel and sunroof. Batteries tend to not have anything clever to be distinguished. Make sure you have no keys in the ignition

No sunroof & manual steering wheel, so all looking good!

By steering wheel it was meant that you sometimes get a warning about ESP . Brake assist etc being inoperative although I have never had this with changing a battery.

If you get these warnings then turning the steering lock to lock several times and driving the car usually extinguishes them.

Yep if the ABS light or ESP light are on then you need to calibrate your steering wheel as well

At 2001 almost certainly, but do a search for ways to unlock the radio without the code.

When i change batteries on any car I've had i always use a motorcycle battery with fly leads on to connect to the positive / negative on the car while i swop out the bigger car battery, not tried it on a Merc yet but no issues so far.

i have a 1200 Kawasaki with a 12v 16 amp battery which is small and light enough with long fly leads and crocodile clips on to do the job in the past.

D.

A 9 volt torch battery will do the trick . Just fit a pair of wires one to the red and then one on to the black contacts and then to the + and - to the leads on the car. Remove the earth clamp first, then the possitive clamp last. Remove old battery ,fit new one in its place , and vis versa on assembly . I keep a bettery booster pack for my jobs like this .

On my 2001 S203 there was a spare +ve connection under the bonnet, near side towards the bulkhead, with a red plastic cover. When I needed a new battery I connected a spare battery to this and the top of the suspension for the -ve, then changed the main battery. Remember the battery leads are still live when you disconnect them, so be careful! It removes any need for re-coding etc.! I actually had this done at somewhere like ATS where I bought the battery. I believe it also protects the SAM's from possible problems.

Well, took my V5 into the local MB dealership to get a code, and it came up on their computer records that my car does not need a code! Obviously, I'll only ever find out if that's true if on changing the battery, the radio then looks or one! But thought it interesting nonetheless...

You don't have to disconnect the power to change the battery if you don't want.
Just get some twin & earth and use that to connect both batteries in parallel while you move the terminals over.
