It’ll be possible shortly with the advanced nav package on A Class, but that uses a camera in the top of the screen. It’s not possible with any other system though

Thanks guys, back to the drawing board

I have just ordered the A Class A180 AMG Line and I am sure they said the front camera is used as a dash cam, as when you are stationary at a junction the camera comes on screen. May have miss heard though

The main difference between just a camera and a dashcam is that the dashcam can store the footage (e.g. to micro-SD card or internal flash memory), which can then be downloaded to other devices.

There are other functions that only a dashcam would have (e.g. parking mode, IR, etc) but the key is local storage of footage, which standard car cameras do not have.

Of course it is not impossible for a car manufacturer to add dashcam functionality as a factory option, but I am not sure if they actually do this.

That’s different to the front part of the 360 camera in other models. The camera in the top of the screen on the new A Class will double as a dash cam in the near future

it surprises me that car manufacturers haven't already jumped on this, with the increased popularity of Dash cams I'm sure it would be a good selling point to have 1 fitted as standard.

I've thought the same - or if not a camera at least provide a USB socket around the wing mirror area so you don't have to get it wired in (and you avoid the "built-in obsolescence" that you get with built-in SatNavs).

Yer it could be if they fit them they are then responsible for GDPR so don't want to go down that route

See the article in the recent Gazette re use of dash cams in Europe. Huge fines and consequences if caught using a camera in some countries so i suspect the manufactueres dont want to get involved.
