Got a chip in the SLK32's windscreen.
Ok I could have it fixed but to be honest the windscreen is looking a little second hand (37K miles worth. I.E. if driving towards the sun it looks kind of sanblasted and has a few other minor stones chips, but out of line of sight. (The result of unavoidable motorway driving) :(

My question is anyone have an idea what a new windscreen going to cost me? :dk: :) And who's best to fit?

Thanks

Check your insurance policy; it's typically £50-100 for a replacement screen and fitting (often within 24 hours) with one of the big chains like Autoglass.

If you were to buy a screen yourself it's about £150ish plus fitting and disposal of the old screen.

You could just live with it until it cracks as long as your MOT isnt due, in the hope it will crack which to be honest i probably would do as long as the chip isnt within your viewing area. i dont think your insurance company will replace it if its not cracked but its worth checking. i would read there terms and conditions rather than calling them because if you say the wrong thing you may not be covered. not trying to be dodgey but if they can get out of paying they will. just booked my van into auto glass i just called them up 0800 363636 and they done everything i didnt even give them my insurance details they told me my excess and contacted my insurance company to sort it all out i paid them the excess £60 and thats it. they've booked it in for four days time. lets hope it goes as well as booking it in. best of luck.

I had a new screen fitted on my W211 E-class recently at the MB Brooklands. £555 + VAT.

I insist on screens being left overnight for the sealant to go off - there's nothing worse than a leaking screen. And I would hate fro teh rain/light sensors to not work after fitting a cheap screen. If the insurance is paying why cut corners?

i forgot to say you should ask for a genuine part because if you dont you will get a copy part.

......I had a chip in my 124 screen, was also misted with tiny scratches like yours. One day I 'slapped' a fly on the screen and sadly it cracked.
£50 new screen. nuff said.

That makes for interesting reading... Thanks Dec :thumb:

Just had a quote from MB , £177.10 for the windscreen + £148.44 INC vat = total £325.54 fitted. (Which they don't have in stock). Once paid I then have to claim a percentage back from my insurance company according to the dealership. That is of course if I want a 'genuine MB Part' fitted, and its optically correct.

The other option is to take a flyer on Autoglass and see if they will provide the 'genuine part'. I'll have to give my Insurance company a ring and see what they are prepared to do, it maybe they will insist that I have to use Autoglass period, therefore the ball is back in my court.

If you are getting the 'genuine' MB screen, it will probably be optically correct and have been made by Pilkingtons and it will also have its own star.
If you go to Autoglass it will probably be a Pilkington screen too, optically correct as well., but you will loose the star. I love this “optically correct” bit, its designed to worry you into buying an MB branded screen.

In my case the Pilkington screen looks exactly the same as the original expect for the etching on the glass and as far as I can see it is also “optically correct”, which is nice.

Don’t forget that if you always have windscreen cover then you have been paying for this screen for the last number of years to the tune of £20 to £25 per year, built into your premium, you will now have to pay another £60? excess on top of all that, that’s why I’m not a fan of windscreen insurance because it costs more through your insurance than it would if you cover yourself.

What does " optically correct " mean. I expect to see through any screen, cheap or dear:)

Mine was fitted by Autoglass a fortnight ago and is made by "Splintex". I can see through it and it keeps the flies from hitting me in the face so it's already a winner.

You made I laugh!:D:D:D:D:thumb: Clearly true though (Excuse the pun) ;)

Fair point well argued. :thumb:

My GF had a screen replaced then literally a week later it was hit by a small rock and it was broken again. Two replacements in a month made insurance seem like a very good idea although I know someone that was declined three new windscreens in a year because the insurance company said it was "too many". Where was this in the policy? After a shouting match with the insurers they eventually coughed up a new screen for him.

That’s two cases of bad luck but very uncommon, the majority of us will go 5 to 10 years or whatever the statistics for windscreen breakage are.

The insurance companies do seem to be pushing this product quite a bit so I imagine it is quite a nice little earner for them.
