Xenon Lights

I'm going to get a newer car (well to me anyway), and I want to know if its possible to replace the Xenon headlight units for the 'old fashioned' Halogen type bulbs?. Maybe its just me but when I'm driving at night using the xenon units the blueish light just doesn't illuminate the road as well as the halogens. This was using two different Audis but I presume Mercs are just the same - or are they? any info or opinions greatly appreciated

Well, yes it is, but not without a lot of expense as you need to replace the entire lamp assembly and the computers may get confused depending on what car it is.

If the car is fitted with OEM 4300K burners rather than chavvy blue aftermarket ones you should be fine. Note that the HID burners can go bluer with age, so it may be as simple as replacing them. D1S burners are about £50 per side for genuine Philips or Osram ones.

I hate blue light for exactly that reason but have no problem with my car's OEM (and presumably original) HIDs, which give great light.

I'm not sure which Mercedes you will try but the W211 E Class xeon lights are far superior than my previous Lexus lamps.

This is exactly the model I was thinking of - an estate (kids!) and as you appear to have the one I'm thinking of - a fortnights loan would be lovely, TA :thumb:

You would love it!
I bought my car last December, dark nights. I remember the first night drive I had in this car. The headlights were, are, amazing, so much better than my old car, which had xeon lights too. They light up the road much further and wider and illuminate road signs clearly! Try a night time test drive, might be difficult now, but you won't be disappoint, they really are that good. The rest of the car is excellent too!

^ Seconded, although to be pedantic, it's "xenon". "Xeon" is an Intel processor, and something's very wrong with it if it's giving off light...

thinking of switching to xenon lighting but it's kinda expensive from mamabenz. anyone had experience with good aftermarket ones?

Well said, Troon! And with a small x too - only chemical symbols take a capital, not the names of the elements. So it's silicon, Si, calcium, Ca, xenon, Xe.

I'm looking for a 211 estate too. I like the Elegance interior but I'm being swayed towards an Avantgarde by (1) availability, and (2) user reports here of the superiority of the xenon lights.

Incidentally, does 'bi-xenon' mean HID for both main and dip? And if so, which one do you get if you have only mono-xenon?

I think the op realises that zenon lights are good, but some xeon lights are better than other Xenon lights.

Ah, I see - sort of. So bi-xenon means there's only one but it serves two functions.

Now I've grasped that I'll get back to something that I never cracked during my biology studies all those years ago, and which came back to me when I found some willow catkins last weekend. Most plants have male and female parts in the same flower. Of the rest some have separate male and female flowers on one plant, while others have entire plants that are all-female or all-male. One of these types is called 'monoecious', the other 'dioecious', but I never could remember which was which.

End of diversion.

CheersJJ, will try one ASAP - It does seem as the Audi (an '08 and a '06) ones I experienced were either old or rubbish - Cheers for the recommendations.

Illegal and dazzling to oncoming drivers.

Only way to do it properly is to put OEM units in along with the levelling sensors and a wash system.

renault12ts seems to be interested in me, I'm married dude

actually we share the same basic constitution laws. modifying a car with aftermarket products is illegal as well. furthermore, I do not recall dazzling other drivers is strictly a "uk mode" . however going for aftermarket xenon wont get the police on my tail ;)
