The original codes were: P0150 O2 Sensor Upstream P0306 Misfire Cylinder 6 Both O2 sensors also replaced. It was on the second visit I was told about the possible blocked cat.

I should add that in two weeks time I'm driving down to Lake Como in Italy and would love the car to be in the best shape possible.

Exact same thing happened to me. Suspect it was a lot of short journeys in London. Booted it a few times and problem went away.

If that doesn't work, buy a £30 code reader from eBay / Amazon and see what the fault codes are

The things I replaced (in order) when addressing the same problem - 12 new Bosch plugs and leads - 2 new Bosch coil packs - New Bosch MAF - Removed Cats - 2 new upstream Bosch O2 Sensors - New Bosch fuel filter - New air filter - Gearbox reset - Cataclean

I recently had similar problems with my CLK. Firstly, get the codes read. No point guessing. I also now swear by Cataclean and Redex.

This particular model attaches to the top and bottom of the bootlid. Like you I was a little worried about the hooks, however these ones are coated in a soft rubber like material. In order to be 100% sure they would leave a mark I also carefully covered the inside of the hooks with velvet tape.
