whining

2001 E220 CDi Avantgarde Tiptronic Whining noise coming from rear of car. Thought it was the rear tyres so I replaced them. Noise still there. Brought the car to dealer and they advise that oil level in diff was extremely low. They reckong the whining noise is from worn gears in the diff...

My air con is making a strange groaning noise (intermittently), I thought it might be the bearings in the blower motor as when I switch the motor off the noise stops, however, if I switch the EC mode on with the blower motor still running the noise stops so I dont think it can be the blower...

I have a 93 C180 and it makes a whining noise. It sounds as if it is a belt but could there be another reason. My friend has a C200 and it makes the same noise. Do all 4 cylinder mercs make that noise or are ours just noisy due to some basic problem such as poorly tensioned belts ?
