168 maf sensor

Hi My A140 W168 2001 will start very easily but will not rev correctly or run evenly, then cuts out. It ran for a few days but was acting from cold like there was no auto choke or a modern equivalent, once warm it was fine.Suspected coolant sensor but can`t even find it.Now car will not run at all Suspect MAF sensor.It is the stupid design of MAF and ECU combined, very expensive.After lots of Web reading, removed and stripped down. MAF looks clean and OK. tested both elements, 1 10 ohms 1 475 ohms, don`t know if thats ok, no info.I I start car with MAF box in place, useless. If i start car with MAF box removed runs nice and smooth, put box back in place AOK. If I turn ignition off and on again useless again. PS car only worth £250, MAF unit £1400++ Any help anywhere please.. PPS if new MAF needed the car is a scrapper.Can i drive it to local Webuyanycar( 4 miles) with no air filter?? Thanks anyone
