I am told the C-class engines above are all the same but with different power outputs. Is this true? If so, how is the power output changed from one engine to the next and of course, can you 'upgrade' with some magic chip? :-)

Whilst they are the same basic engine, the figure is the displacement (in litres) meaning they all have differing stroke lengths.

The statement above is false, they all have the SAME stroke lengths. The OP is correct.

They all have the same engine (2.1 litre) but at different levels of tune.

They can be upgraded, but don't forget to tell your insurance company.

No such thing as a 180CDI (only A & B Class IIRC) on the C Class only 200 and 220.

Same engines, different outputs

The '200' and '220' figures bear no significance to the engine displacement - the engines are 2.1L 4 cylinder diesels. The 200 being the lower output of the two designations.
