Hello, my mate as the 220cdi 54 reg, the other day while out driving found poor power followed by emiting lots of black smoke, he told me the car is overdue a service by a few "thousand miles" how many im not sure, it's covered 90,000mls.

The car was took to the merc dealer here in leeds and found the turbo shot at £3,000? for the part plus fitting, & damage to the cat and lambda sensor etc.

My question is are these a common failure? or is this due to poor servicing and the lack of good oil to the turbo bearings?

May have missed an oil change (not good for a turbo)+ if it gets very hot and you turn off the engine while it is still spinning this will shorten it's life (no oil pressure + heat will help it on it's way) allways let a turbo car tick over for 30 seconds ish: helps cool it down. some cars will say this in the hand book.
PS Bit soon for it to fail had a Rover 218 fell to bits 200,000 engine & turbo still great had to get rid.

Either the cat collapsed blocking the exhaust and sending EGR temps soaring, thus melting the turbo blades, or an intake pipe split and there may not be too much wrong.

Just had my turbo inlet pipe replaced at 92000m - 220 CDi - fixed now and is fine. Problem started with whooshing sound when on the throttle, followed by the engine management light coming on. Finally the limp mode kicked in.

Just an update it's the 220cdi not the 180cdi.

Merc told him deffo turbo shot and cat gone, he's taking it to a indie in leeds.

Some folk won't learn you have to service car's even mercs!

Any idea of cost for the turbo and cat???

Used turbo about £150ish, used cat possibly around the same?

Shop around on the net for some places that do swap out recon units for turbos, then get an indie to do the labour. Should be around £250 - £400 ish. I did this for an Escort Diesel about 8 years ago and it cost me £250 including the labour to remove and refit. As i recall the place i used was in Yorkshire, but cant remember the name.

Inspect the intake trunking and intercooler for splits then disconnect the exhaust after the turbo, but before the Cat.
