hello all

just been stuck in traffic and my 190 started to over heat, I have checked the fan and it is not coming in on the viscose.
Any idea where I can locate one and the price ?

cheers
gary ox.

You may not have a viscous fan but an electromagnetic clutch one. If it is a EM one could be its switch is bust? theres a post on this here http://www.mercedes190.co.uk ->Technical->Electrical & I.C.E.->Electrical Systems-engine fan question supply is normally from fuse 10 in fuse box check its OK.

the front sensor on top of the engine is the one from the clutch fan, shorting the sensor to ground should start the fan up. you can follow the wire up from the fan housing

it is engine cooling fan, I have took the blades off and all that is place now is a round disk approx 120mm across x 30mm wide.

cheers

it certainly looks like the electro magnetic type, I'll have a check tomorrow bit late now to start.
thanks for the help, I'll let you know how I get on.

Heres a picture of the sensor switch you need. Its G in the picture or H if you have air con.

Graeme , is there anything you don't know ! ;)

I had a friend that lived just outside of Crieff near you , in a little place called Ochtertyre .... sadly he'd dead now, but it was a wonderful place when we went to visit him ...

The laird of Ochtertyre

Thanks Howard. If its W124 or W201 related I'll have a go but the post 2000 models are bit of a mystery to me with all their electronic gismos. :o Thats certainly a beautiful bit of Scotland your talking about. More recently Ochtertyre House became the home of Stagecoach bus group millionaire Brian Souter.

Yeah , Douglas lived next door to him ...

I got to know him through archery ( i used to shoot years ago ) , he used to have us up there and we'd go shooting over to Falkland Palace and what not ...

Sadly one night he was working on his bow in his workshop and the string slipped out of his hand at full draw with no arrow on the string . The nocking point came off the string at high speed and hit the riser of the bow and rebounded and went into his neck piercing a main artery ... he was found dead by his wife the next morning...

Very sad , a wonderful man .... :(

EDIT :- Drifted waaaaaaaay off topic there :o

No worries Howard. Its one of the things I like about this forum.:bannana:

190 16 cooling

thankyou very much, the picture certainly simplyfies things.
what is the temperature the fan should come in ? I have the air con.
when sitting in traffic the temperature rises fairly quick to 90 - 95* and the fan is still not running, the normal running is a steady 80*.
one last thing, you don't work offshore by any chance do you ?
the reason I ask is I was offshore with a Graeme Grober a few year ago.

cheers

Not me I,m afraid GROBER is just my forum I.D. According to the manual cut in temp is 110c for the 3 connector aircon equiped model, altho there is a tolerance +/- of a few degrees from unit to unit. Remember also the water temperature gauge has a different sensor so the 2 won't correspond exactly.
BEST THING IS THE CARROT TEST warm the car up to operating temperature. the fan will probably be rotating/idling slowly but can be stopped with a carrot. Let the car continue to idle/ rev at 1,500rpm while stationary the temperature will rise till the fan cuts in. The carrot will then be chopped by the fan now check your temperature gauge for the (indicated) cut in temperature. You will notice when it cuts in by the increase in fan noise alone. the test relies on all the system functioning correctly of course and watch your fingers thats what the carrot is for!

How does a carrot watch your fingers, I thought only potatoes grew eyes...

I see from this and other threads that today is comedy day on MBClub
