190E 2.3 16V rally car

Interesting, never seen this before but it looks like a car owned/built by a Mercedes specialist in Yorkshire

SM Autocare (hence the plate!)

Wonder where it will end up and what they use it for? Quite a niche market.

I’ve still got a lot of 2.3-16 spares tucked away, need to have a clear out! :)

It is that car....still on that plate.

Yes at the moment, the auction video posted by the OP says to check with them whether it’s included or not (it’s not of great value money wise and I suspect the garage may wish to keep it?)

IIRC Mercedes developed the 16 valve engined 190s for International rallying competition. Unfortunately the rallying world was about to be radically changed with the introduction of 4 Wheel Drive models epitomised by the Audi Quattro--- bad luck+ bad timing. A young
Ayrton Senna allegedly helped in their initial handling development.

I don’t understand the attraction of the plate, it’s just a £250 DVLA cheapie that had meaning to the garage? Not even worth the hassle of transferring it to most people :)

Car is still registered on this plate at the moment though 👍

I don't think the plate has any particular significant relevance. The question is whether this is the car which was rallied by SM Auto Care, or a replica?

In view of the statement "No V5 - new owner to apply. No paperwork." I think it's highly likely to be an imitation, possibly not to the same specification as the original.

Pretty sure that car was on ebay recently with starting bids at £18,000. The no V5 could be because the new owner bought it to flip for a quick profit at auction.
From the detailed photos in the Matthewsons listing the car looks to be a proper 190e 2.3-16 rally car, down to the stickers on the roll cage and the in date belts. De stickered and mot'd that would be a fun car.

It’s still on this same registration.

Last V5 was issued in 2015 so not changed registered keeper recently.

What do you mean about an imitation? It’s not some MB factory special, it’s just a W201 that someone has modified for their own use. There won’t be two of these that’s for certain :)

It’s not an original 2.3-16.

This is a 2.0 that’s had an engine transplant :thumb:

I don’t think this is some special original rally car, it’s a self build by the garage that owned it?

Just a modified car that they took out for some fun and competition, not something from the history books really :)

If you look at the MOT history you can see the mileage went from 200k to 96k between 2013 and 2015, so I suspect that’s when it had the engine swap and the 160mph speedo fitted at the same time :thumb:

Indeed a functional stage rally car built by enthusiasts. Hopefully.

Failed its mot on subframe and seat belt rot over a decade ago. Wonder if it was reshelled back then? A mystery car.

It’s not a re-shell, original 2.0 car that has just had an engine swap and other bits.

Got yer. What a difficult car to value. The estimate £22-24k is around the going rate for a nice road going stock 190e 2.3/2.5 valver. Seems optimistic.

Sure is, I think it has quite a niche appeal.

The parts used in the conversion - cage, tank, pedal box etc may be quite expensive.

The 16v parts are quite rare these days too.

But it’s not got the originality or history side.

Looks quite rough as well as you’d expect for something that’s been used in the way it has of course. But I’m sure it’s mechanically sound

Personally I see it at half the guide price, but if someone really wants it and thinks of the values of other 80s stuff then maybe it’ll get bid more.

Will be interesting to see what it goes for - you'll be able to see the amount on the Mathewsons website afterwards.
