I drive 190E 1991 sports version. Love it too much to dispose it. Cuurently having problem with engine overheating when not moving. Please.. does anyone know how I can get the engine replaced with guarantee and wont leave such a big hole in my purse?????

Probably worth browsing ebay for a spares or repair with a good engine.

Thanks Thmsshaun!
Great! at least now I know I can source it from ebay...How can I be assured its a good engine? I have zero clue when it comes to engine. Got a quote of 1K for re-cond engine from a garage. Is it reasonable? Should I travel up north for cheaper deal? And how long does it take to get it done??

Why would you need a new engine for an overheating problem? Surely there is some problem with the cooling system unless the overheating has caused damage to the engine itself..

Is your fan working correctly?

Have you tried changing the head gasket?

I took it garage and am told nothing can be done except to replace the engine. To replace the 'sealant' ?? on the engine is equally expensive as getting the engine replaced. Hence, solution is to replace the engine. I guess since then the overheating must have caused damage to the engine as the temperature shoot up pretty quick too once it is static.

Oh nooooo, more money to fork out for cooling system as well???

Am trying to find honest, reliable garage but they all seems to scare me off... Anyone you can suggest?

Nope, rely 100% on the mechanic at the garage....have no clue whatsoever...

Head gasket could be changed but there was worry that there might be cracks in the engine. If that's the case then I would have needed a new engine then and the cost could end up twice as much. Currently there's sludge in the cooling system.

Sounds like a head gasket.

Have you tried a different garage?

Have tried a couple of garages. They are happyto change the gasket but problem is once they start opening it up and found cracks in it there's no point replacing it. Unless they can somehow check to see whether there are cracks without actually dismantling the engine?

Could be the electromagnetic clutch which locks up your cooling fan. Its activated by a sensor/ relay. If one of these is broken the fan wont lock up to cool the engine when the car is stationary. OH and definitely get a second opinion from a reputable Merc Specialist. For example Andy Gayle charges £275 +vat for a 4 cylinder 190 head gasket according to his web site. http://www.aimpronet.com/andygayle/servicedetails.asp why dont you try Ian at w124 works as has been suggested. http://www.124works.com/

Contact Ian B Walker at 124 Works, I am sure others would agree with me on him. I think he may even have an engine for a 190, that is if you really need one.

Regards,

Asif.

M102 engines aren't immune from head gasket issues, at the worst end only the head will be cracked, but they aren't famed for cracked heads like BMWs.

I can't honestly see you needing an engine or even a head, but if it turns out that you do I just cut the engine and box out of a 200TE, and you can have the engine for what the export Nigerians will pay me (£200) and there's nothing wrong with it.

OOp Narth here I have just had an engine re bored, new pistons, new rings, new mains, new big ends and new thrust washers. Total cost £462. Other bits to get it on the road totaled £150. Bit cheaper than a 1 grand recon.

Hi Ian, would you be able to quote me on the job needed? And roughly how long will it take? Thanks.
