190e

These are nice simple cars to own and maintain...

If driving in central London, be sure to check it doesnt over heat standing still as these are common for viscous couplings, water pumps etc.

Also the heater matrix is a job that often needs to be tackled... with any luck its already been done.

I can see one jacking cover missing.. otherwise looks lovely.

The 4cyl 190's have an electromagnetic fan clutch. A fairly common failure is the fan switch. Cheap and easy to replace.

I have made a reasonable offer on the car.... But I am waiting to hear back from the owner as she needs to consider it. I did see she posted on the 190 forum giving it a "bump" and putting it on ebay..... My offer was reasonable really and she seems she desperately needs to sell so dont see why she didnt accept. I'd even be prepared to collect this weekend.

One person's idea of reasonable is not necessarily shared by others. For what it's worth I'd offer £1250 on this car as I think it's worth it.

I know you can get them cheaper, but this car has history, provenance and condition going for it. That's worth a lot.

Yes you are correct and I know you are right..... I shall wind me neck in so to speak :)

Does that mean you've offered less..?

If you really want it I'd up the offer.

Yeah I have offered a bit less than that... I shall tell dad to up his offer and then see what happens. It is a nice motor and I want it more than my dad wants it I think. So much so that when I put my winter steelies on my daily drive, a Golf GTD, I'll use the 190E and give him the Golf for a while lol

Yep, my heater matrix has just gone (clouds of white vapour into the cabin with the heat on was a good clue) and replacement is £12 from Eurocrap. However, no idea yet of labour cost for replacement.

Charles ,

I did that job on my 2.6 , I got the car cheap with the matrix leaking and causing the windscreen to steam up .

The job is covered in the Haynes manual , is perfectly do-able as a DIY job , but does entail removal of the centre console and the entire dashboard . There is nothing difficult , but it is a long job , which took me a full Saturday from start to finish , following Mr Haynes instructions .

So, my offer was accepted and we are the proud owners of the 190E. Just got home with it. The wiper is awfully slow as if it's going to stop though.......l Any ideas?

Well done. Enjoy :thumb:

It's some time since I've driven a 190, is the wiper slow at all settings?

Thanks! It seems alright to drive.

Yes it is but I've found the relevant thread and I've greased it up with WD-40 for now and it seems good

There's quite a lot online about these wiper mechanisms. I have a feeling that some grease will be required, remember WD40 tends to dry things out.

If it helps concentrates the mind, price one

I had to have it replaced on my 202....I have wiped that trauma from my memory!

Here's a great vid on how to clean and lubricate the wiper mechanism.

Do the wiper as soon as you can, after a while the motor will seize up under the load. I replaced mine on my 190E 2.0, an easy job. I still have the wiper and motor ordered from Germany for a lot less than UK ones, to find out that Mercedes actually went to the trouble of mounting LHD on the opposite side to RHD!

When mine went, the dealer had them in stock
