Had the car about 4 months. Driven about 1200 miles since then. No idea of the service history. It has done a verified, 67,000 miles.
Drove 20 miles, car running perfectly.
Daughter and 2 kids got in, never had passengers before.
Car starts up easily, hmm ABS light stayed on.
Drove off, stopped at a junction, idling at about 1000rpm, normally it's about 500.
Put it into neutral, revs climb to 3000😱
Dropped family off and had a stressful drive home.
Next day it won't start. Told the breakdown guy the story. He took the air filter off, the throttle flap was not closing. He pulled it into the closed position and the car started. He sprayed lots of WD40 into the throttle body, still would drop below 3000rpm.
Next day, I looked at the throttle body, oh good, it's now closed, but car wouldn't start. I'm assuming that the throttle flap is purely mechanical?
I've researched on the internet🙄😂.
I have it in my head that the relay that controls the fuel pump is buggered. Not exactly a normal relay! circuit board inside. It appears to control several things, air conditioning (really!) if its playing up it can affect the idle.
It seemed odd to me that the ABS light came on when the idle and starting problem appeared.
My question is this.
The fuel pump is under the car, near the rear axle. If the ignition is turned on, should I hear this running?
Regarding the relay, if I turn the ignition on, should I be able to hear the contacts open and close. ( if it works like a normal cheap relay.)

Anyone care to share my thoughts about the relay?

OVP relay, think it has a fuse in the to of it??

It sends power to the fuel pump and ABS

Sure it sits in the engine bay up at the passenger scuttle area.

Check the fuse

Now hang on,, the flap only moves with vacuum so dont push and pull it .There is no need to get you hands on the throttle plate.Fuel pumps or pump in your car only run for seconds .

Thank you for your response.

Would I, or someone with their head near the fuel pump hear it priming?
I assume it would prime when the ignition is turned on, prior to starting the engine?

It will be the OVP relay.

Have you charged or jump started the car recently?

If the weather is OK tomorrow, I'll check the relay, assuming that I can find it. 😂
Could be a blown fuse, or dry joints inside.

I think there’s some cheaper aftermarket ones available now, but I’ve never tried them myself.

Should be behind the plastic cover, behind the battery - near the bulkhead. Aluminium body, silver in colour, with a clear plastic top. About one inch cube and 2-3 inches tall.

You guys are brilliant., thank you. 😊

Tried to upload a photo to show the liweded car, message says that file is too large

Just lifted the bonnet to have a look. Battery on passenger side. Black plastic cover behind it.
Heater hose is near the battery and this cover, it's a bit damp, there are two jubilee clips, bit of green staining. Maybe it's losing a bit of water and this area gets hot and damp. Wouldn't
help a relay 🙄
I tend to fret and panic with situations like this. Just the way I am.

What's the part # on your OVP & fuel pump?
OVP is twin fused.

89 7236 000
Made in Hungary
Pulled the black plastic out from behind the battery. Found the relay, pulled it out from it's holder. But without removing the battery, access to it from the female terminal was proving difficult.
Put it back in place for now.
I'll take the battery out tomorrow ( and fret about losing the Kenwood radio, for which I have no code🙄)
Perhaps I should go ahead and buy a relay, not a Mercedes one though, probably very expensive, for a gamble that it is the relay.
But everything is pointing to that, found a post on here, which said that replacing the relay turned off the ABS warning light on the dash.

Buy a quality part dont buy aftermarket .Go good used one if a new one is out of your reach, like i did . You should be able to pull out the relay for fuel pump as well as the OVP relay and clean up the base of both. Check all fuses and clean up the holders .

I take it that the fuel pump relay is the huge one next to the OVP?
Thanks again, much appreciated.
