Mercedes C180 Classic Estate 1996 and a Ducati Paso 907ie in the Garage.
1996 C180 W202 Classic Estate.

Okay as my car doesn't want to play (see another thread all help gratefully accepted) I decided to have a look at and replace a few of the night time dash lights that have sadly past away.

On my dash to the left of the displays where the Engine temp and Fuel Guage are I have an LCD type face identical in size to the clock display on the right in the rev counter dial.

I assumed this was as shown in the owners manual the Outside Temp gauge display.

However on inspection there is just a hole at the rear no bulb or loose wires infact I cannot locate any loose wire or Bulb so the question is.......Does it exist or have I just a blank display?

I was told by a local Garage who MOT'd the wifes car that this was where my fault codes were displayed and insisted that the Temp guage if fitted was switched on off in the clock display.....I still don't believe him the manual says Temp Guage here only.

So is there a bulb behind or is wired internally on a fuse somewhere hidden as I cannot see it on the Fuse list.

Is it just a hole and a blank dial space?

Others should confirm but I think your garage is wrong. I had a 202 like yours and had no outside temp facility. Fault codes only show up on the fault code reader not internally in the car.

Never had the cluster out on that so dont know what the set up is behind there. If you look under the front number plate (hands and knees job, you dont have to take it off) you should be able to see a "temp sensor" A wire from this goes all the way back to the cluster to a bit of a loom which displays a temp via digital read out there.

Garage is totally wrong methinks. Most 202s have issues with the OT displays.

My pre-facelift 202 did not have an outside temperature display and so I retrofitted it, pretty simple to do as you just need to buy the gauge and the probe and wire it all up.

The fault codes are registered on the ECU and can only be accessed via diagnostic equipment plugged into the port under the bonnet. On facelift cars there used to be a temp display incorporated into the dash cluster. Pre-facelifts were not so lucky unless you increased the price and trim levels.

The temperature gauge is black and sits on the passenger side of the bumper, as trapperjohn says, its a cable and goes into the passenger cabin.

Thankyou folks no sensor and a blank space in my dash.

Appreciate the help. Problem/Question solved ..................now if I could just get the B****y thing to run sweet.
