I've got this great car running around, but it has a few problems. First one is when I start it, the engine turns, but then it stumbles and almost cuts out unless I have my foot on the accelerator. Why is this? Otherwise it runs ok. Next problem, sometimes the key pad won't open the doors or lock the doors when I arrive at my destination. Why is this? Expiring key pad batteries inside or what? Next problem, last couple of years the engine was not making much noises, now there are now noises coming from the front near the black plastic cover. Is this the timing chain or the cooling pump or the tensioner giving up? Noise sounds a bit rough. I have to listen again unless you people have the same problem and can tell me what it is and how to have it removed. The battery runs down quite a bit if I keep the car unused for 1 or 2weeks in the garage. This is my weekend car so it stays in my garage unused sometimes for 3 weeks if I forget to start up the motor. Is this bad for the engine? After all its gone 228000kms already and the oil still looks very new after last year's service. It doesn't run more than 200kms a month unless I have to use it for a long trip. Apart from these, its a very nice car to drive, a bit heavy for the 1800 engine, but it is very fuel efficient and runs better on 98RON than the 92 or 94. The 5 speed auto is a lot better than the older 1994 4 speed auto box that has the 1 to 2 bump from a cold start. I still have a 94 version, but it really has to be run on 98RON or it has no power at all uphill. Helpful advice needed from similar C180 owner/drivers, thanks.:D

Sounds as if your car engine management is not compensating for the engine being cold by increasing the idle speed / mixture enrichment. Could be lots of causes of this?

Get new batteries for your remote immediately. It may however be an internal problem with the key failing details here. http://mbclub.co.uk/forums/showthread.php?t=36176
get this sorted/replaced / a spare as a priority because you may find yourself stranded with an immobilised car otherwise.

Your noise from the front could be several things which you already mentioned. The one one you didn't is the poly V belt ( wide fanbelt) tensioner. Together with its associated components is relatively easy to replace. without hearing the sound its very difficult to know.

i doubt if it is the chain. sounds like tensioner pulley to me.
