Hi,

We have a 2003 W638 Vito, 112 with 9 seats and friendly name is the "venga Bus".... anyway...

Always looked after serviced but does get used a lot as my daughter is part of a dance troop so spend many a weekend cruising the Motorways to and from venues all across the UK....

Venga is a 112 with just over 170K and still very strong with hardly any rust.... but..... it's started cutting out at total random times... after start up, ticking over, low RPM, 3K I really can't isolate what invokes it...

Normally it will cut out when driving, Traction control light and glow plug light up and the van jerks with the loss of running but then just catches again and we are off but.... it's started dying now and has to be turned off/on - wired as hell....

Really noticed it smoking as well and it stinks....

Recently had the fuel line from the High pressure pump replaced as was leaking and also have the seals on the pump done and thought it was fixed....

low fuel (on qtr tank) seemed to be related but it now don't matter what amount of fuel is in it will just cut out when ever she feels like it...

Had new turbo, clutch, suspension, full exhuast, fuel filter, and loads more in the last 12mths - love her but it's getting to the dangerous stage now - losing everything in the outside lane of the M4 at 23:00hrs with your entire family in it means something has to give - trace the fault or get a VW :(

IT's been on Mstar twice without any errors but being unable to trace the cause of the fault/make it happen is the hardest problem.

I have a feeling it could be the injectors but before I go down this road would that fit?

I know this is an expensive root to take - could it be something like a Fuel pressure regulater/sensor - I am at a loss and really don't want to give up on the van.... it's part of the family now...

Would fault injectors not show up as a engine fault?

I have been using a Indy Merc place by me but is it time to bite the bullet and take it to Merc?

Please, please offer some advice...

:wallbash:

Sounds like air getting into the fuel system

Take it back to who ever did the fuel line work it might be a bad seal, they should be able to pressure test the system.

I don't know why but I don't have a great deal of faith in the Indy that worked on it previously so might look elsewhere...

Any recommendations for South Wales...?

Would a good commerical / diesel place be as good as a Merc garage?

I have a feeling it's going to be the injectors due to the over fueling / smoke/smell...

Thanks for your advice.

What part of Wales are you?

Get a leak test done on the injectors. It should indicate if any are done or on their way out.

Hi,

Thanks for the replies.

I am about 10 mins from the end of the M4 - I can't PM you due to account status.

Leak test - that sounds interesting...

The injectors just seem the obvious to me as she is smoking a lot even at idle - I did wonder if a knackered injector would cause it to cut out as it would be over fueling as well...

You can do the leak of test one injector at a time. Unplug the crank sensor so it does fire up. Remove the leak of pipe from one injector at a time and replace with a clear tube (i find it best) and place it into a beaker/jar. Crank the engine over for 30 seconds and measure the amount of fuel. Do it for all 4 and they sould be even... Anything too high or low would suggest a problem in that injector.

I tried to take the engine cover/inlet manifold away at the weekend and failed. I wanted to check if any of the injectors had been leaking first but due to failing light after the rugby I could not find the bolts at the back so will try again as soon as I can.

I seriously think injectors is the way forward here... she has done 170K now which seems a lot on a set of injectors to me....

What kinda of money should I be preparing for if I do need 4 injectors (might be one causing it but prefer to pay only one for this)

I have seen them around the 150-200 mark I think brand new online but can't back that up.
