My SL was fine up until I took it off the road for 4 weeks as tax had run out. When I came to use it again I found the radio link wasn't working with the keys and I could only open the door using the infrared (holding key right next to the door handle). Once the door was open, I found that the interior light took a few minutes to come on!

When the car was started, I found the consumables battery was flat, so, as I'd had a few problems with this previously I bought a new battery from MB and fitted it in the boot.

However, this did not resolve the radio link problem. I took the car to MB and they ran a STAR diagnostics test which revealed no problems. They said the problem could relate to a number of issues and they would have to start investigating these one by one... This could prove to be a VERY costly process at over £100 per hour labour, with the first estimate being 5 hours labour to remove the dash!

I then took the car to an independent MB garage and they also couldn't locate the cause of the problem.

When I first bought the car 2 years ago, I had the COMAND system replaced with a Pioneer Sat Nav & Bluetooth phone/music system. Suspecting this might be the cause I took the car back to the shop and had it checked. However, no problems were found.

I now really don't know what to do. Mechanically the car is in great shape aside from the radio-linked central locking problem, although if not used for a day the consumables battery goes flat again. I've checked the PSE pump and it's fine and dry, in fact, once the battery is charged the roof opens fine.

Any suggestions to solve this problem would be welcomed... otherwise I'm beginning to wonder if the car is going to be worth more as a 'spares or repair'

The 4 week lay off may have knackered the 11 year old alarm siren which in turn may have blown the fuse for the RF central locking. Try unplugging the alarm siren and check any fuses relating to central locking or alarm.

Thanks. Fuses were all checked but I'll give it a go unplugging the alarm. It had actually been going off a few times for no apparent reason hours after the car had been locked using the infrared signal.
