2010 Mercedes E 350 CDI Sport
Hi can anyone throw any light on the following

I appear to be suffering overheating issues , when I say (appear) I have not had the car long but noticed a couple of days ago that the engine reaches operating temp = 85 ? quite quickly , the heat is also very noticeable in the cabin,
the temp inside the engine bay after a fairly short run also seems excessive

Fluid levels appear to be fine.

I take it you're looking at the gauge and noticing the needle is not sitting in the middle. This threw me out as well, the engine temp runs at 90 degrees, so looking at the gauge it should be above the half way point. This us how Mercedes have set their gauges.

My 220s engine bay seems hotter than other cars I've had. But to getting to 85 quick shouldnt worry you. Just shows good thermostat control. Shouldn't go over 95 tho.

Many thanks for taking the time to reply, much appreciated

I was getting concerned at both the speed it reaches 85 and the fact that is was 85 on the gauge , we returned after a short run yesterday approx 5 miles and out of curiosity I popped the bonnet to get a feel as to just how hot things were , and to be honest everything felt a lot hotter than I would have expected even the plastic engine top cover , the bit that includes the V6 sign was too hot to touch , it even smelled too hot if thats possible

Paranoid = ?????

Yes ;)

You may not realise but the turbo lives at the back of the Vee, under that plastic cover, so things do get pretty hot under there. Nothing to worry about though.

Enjoy your car :thumb:

You should get ample of warning signs on the dash if the car was overheating, providing that your temp gauge stays somewhere in the middle, there should be nothing to worry about.

The V6 engine bays do seem to get very hot and take a while to completely cool.

Obviously, I can't say just from reading this thread that your car isn't overheating, but your figures don't seem out of the ordinary to me. I'd be more concerned if it just carried on rising.

In addition to a turbo you also have a dpf fitted close to the engine which will also generate a lot of heat in the engine bay and there isn't much space around the block for air to circulate. There is a separate duct in the centre of the engine cover (well, I presume there is on your year, there certainly is on later ones) to direct cool air to the turbo.

They're also designed to warm up as quickly as possible to help reduce emissions etc. All a bit more complex than they used to be.

Brilliant advice/information .

New to Mercedes ownership and on line forums , very impressed with both to date
Thanks again
